Post No. REG025 - Casual Registration Officer
We are looking for a customer focused person with excellent communication skills to join our busy and dedicated team. Our office is based in The Mansion House, 4 Stow Park Circle, Newport, but you may also be required to register at other venues (civil and religious) within the local authority area.
Your main duties will be the registration of births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships, and the issue of certificates from those events.
As many of our ceremonies take place on weekends and Bank Holidays, there will be a commitment to working on these days on a Rota basis. You will also provide cover for Registration Officers during the week. Whilst this is usually pre-planned, the successful candidates must be able to work at short notice.
We are looking for candidates who will be able to deal with customers in a friendly, yet professional manner and maintain meticulous attention to detail with clear, legible handwriting.
You must have significant administration experience, including personal face to face dealings with the public, preferably within the Registration Service, although full training will be given.
It is essential that you have at least 2 A Levels (or, if not, 2 years' experience in the Registration Service).
You must have word processing, spreadsheet, internet and database skills. An ability to understand, speak and write in Welsh would be an advantage.
Please Note: As clear, legible handwriting is such an important requirement of this post, a handwriting sample may be requested from short-listed applicants.
Closing date: 14.08.2026
We welcome applications for all our jobs in either Welsh or English. An application submitted in Welsh will not be treated less favourably than an application submitted in English.
Newport City Council is committed to working towards its workforce being more representative of the population that we serve and particularly welcomes applications from people from minority ethnic communities represented (or living) in the city. Selection will be made on ability and skills to undertake the role.
Newport City Council is not currently supporting applicants with sponsorship for right to work. In applying for a vacancy, applicants should already have the right to work in the UK.
