Job Purpose
The Managing Director – Head of Technology and Communications(T&C) Corporate Banking (UK) is a senior leadership role responsible for leading, developing, and managing the T&C Corporate Banking franchise in the United Kingdom.
The role holder is accountable for delivering sustainable financial performance, ensuring robust risk and control standards, and driving effective client coverage through a coordinated, product-agnostic approach across Corporate Banking, Investment Banking, Markets, and Transaction Services. The individual will translate strategic priorities into actionable business plans, oversee franchise execution, and maintain senior client relationships within a regulated UK banking environment.
Responsibilities
1. Business Strategy & Franchise Management
- Develop and execute a comprehensive multi-year strategy for the UK T&C Corporate Banking franchise, aligning with global objectives while incorporating local market dynamics, sector trends, and competitive positioning.
- Define and maintain a clearly articulated target client universe across sub-sectors, ensuring prioritisation of clients where the firm can achieve sustainable competitive advantage.
- Establish and oversee the operating model for UK T&C coverage, coverage intensity, and resource allocation
- Continuously assess market developments, including regulatory changes, capital market conditions, and technology disruption, and adapt strategy to capture growth opportunities and mitigate potential risks.
- Deliver against agreed financial objectives, including revenue growth, return on capital, market share expansion, and balance sheet optimisation, while maintaining alignment with broader franchise priorities.
2. Client Relationship Management
- Maintain overall responsibility for senior-level relationships across the UK T&C client portfolio, acting as a primary point of contact for key clients and ensuring consistent engagement at the C-suite and board level.
- Oversee the development and execution of comprehensive client plans, incorporating lending, treasury, capital markets, and risk management solutions tailored to individual client needs and strategic priorities.
- Ensure high-quality delivery of the firm’s full product suite, including cash management, trade finance, FX, debt capital markets, structured finance, and derivatives, in a coordinated and seamless manner.
- Drive proactive engagement with clients on strategic topics such as capital structure optimisation, funding strategies, M&A financing, and liquidity management.
- Monitor client satisfaction and service levels, ensuring alignment with internal standards and continuous improvement in client experience.
3. Portfolio Risk & Capital Management
- Own the credit quality, capital efficiency and structural integrity of the T&C portfolio; Partner with Risk, Capital Management, and Legal to construct transactions that meet or exceed return hurdles while safeguarding the firm’s balance sheet and reputation.
- Anticipate and mitigate sector-specific risks, including regulatory shifts, capital market volatility, cross-boarder sanction exposure and technology obsolescence, embedding proactive risk frameworks into client strategy and deal structuring.
- Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency.
4. Risk Management & Governance
- Maintain overall responsibility for credit quality, portfolio performance, and risk-adjusted returns within the UK T&C portfolio, ensuring adherence to internal risk appetite and underwriting standards.
- Partner closely with Risk, Legal, and Compliance functions to assess, structure, and approve transactions in line with regulatory expectations and internal governance standards.
- Identify, assess, and proactively manage sector-specific risks, including regulatory developments, market volatility, technological disruption, and leverage trends.
- Promote a strong risk culture within the team, ensuring transparency, effective escalation of issues, and accountability for risk-related decisions.
- Uphold the highest standards of integrity, ethical conduct, and control discipline, safeguarding the firm’s reputation and ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and policies.
5. People Management & Leadership
- Lead, manage, and develop a team, providing clear direction, performance management, and ongoing coaching.
- Set and monitor individual and team performance objectives aligned with overall business strategy, ensuring accountability for delivery against financial and non-financial targets.
- Drive talent development and succession planning, identifying high-potential individuals and supporting career progression within the organisation.
- Foster an inclusive and collaborative team culture that promotes diversity of thought, strong employee engagement, and adherence to firm values.
Qualifications
Experience
- Extensive experience (typically 15+ years) in Corporate Banking, Investment Banking, or related disciplines, with significant exposure to T&C sector clients.
- Demonstrated track record of managing client relationships, originating business, and delivering financial results within the UK
- Proven experience in leading teams and managing complex organisational structures within a regulated financial services environment.
Technical Skills
- Strong understanding of corporate banking products, including lending, capital markets, treasury services, trade finance, and derivatives.
- Solid credit assessment and structuring capability, with an understanding of risk-return considerations and capital allocation.
- Good working knowledge of UK regulatory frameworks and governance requirements.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, balance strategic and operational responsibilities, and deliver consistent outcomes.
Leadership Capabilities
- Demonstrated ability to lead and influence within a matrix organisation, balancing client, product, and control function priorities.
- Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to engage effectively across senior internal and external audiences.
- Boardroom presence and C-suite credibility: exceptional written and verbal communication skills; ability to articulate high-conviction themes, challenge client thinking, and command trust at the highest level.
Education & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) required.
- Advanced degree (MBA or equivalent) preferred.
