The Speechwriter / Copywriter supports the Chief Speechwriter in delivering high-quality written communications for the Leader of the Opposition.
You will draft speeches, copy, and campaign messaging across a wide range of subjects. Most of your work will involve speeches for the Leader of the Opposition, although you may be expected to support other members of the Shadow Cabinet where required. Projects will include keynote speeches, campaign events, and other written communications.
This is a fast-paced role at the heart of the Leader's Office. It requires exceptional writing ability, strong political judgment, intellectual curiosity and the ability to produce high-quality work to very short deadlines.
The successful candidate will be comfortable distilling complex policy into persuasive language, turning campaign messaging and political strategy into compelling stories, and learning quickly to write in the Leader of the Opposition’s style.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft speeches for the Leader of the Opposition.
- Draft forewords, campaign copy and other written communications.
- Work closely with the Chief Speechwriter to develop speech structures, messaging and narrative across the Leader of the Opposition’s communications.
- Translate complex policy and political arguments into clear and persuasive and language.
- Produce first drafts from policy briefings, research and discussions with shadow ministers, advisers and policy teams.
- Iterate and improve existing drafts, ensuring they are concise, coherent and compelling.
- Adapt style and tone to suit different audiences and occasions.
- Conduct background research to strengthen speeches with anecdotes and compelling factual evidence.
- Work closely with policy and communications teams to ensure consistency of message.
- Respond quickly to changing political events, producing high-quality written material under significant time pressure.
- Maintain flexibility in approach, and be willing to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends on a regular basis.
- Maintain the highest standards of discretion, confidentiality and political judgment.

- Outstanding writing and editing skills, with the ability to write clearly, persuasively and in a range of different voices.
