Head Usher
TRUST Centre, The Ringway, Beck Road, Huddersfield, HD1 5DG
Active Training Team Ltd, Casual / Freelance
About us:
Active Training Team is a London-based company using experiential and immersive training to drive behavioural change in people and organisations. Our sessions blend interactive experience, film, drama, live action and facilitated discussion. Our TRUST Centre in Huddersfield delivers an immersive, theatre-based one-day induction programme for a major rail company client.
The role:
As Head Usher, you'll lead the front-of-house team in creating a warm, professional welcome for every participant — while keeping safety, comfort and smooth running at the heart of the day. You'll work closely with the Company Stage Manager, taking the lead on guiding participant groups, supporting and mentoring the usher team, and stepping in wherever the day needs a steady hand.
This role would suit an experienced supervisor or team leader with a background in theatre, events or customer-facing operations — someone who's as comfortable supervising a team as they are greeting the public.
What you'll be doing:
- Arriving in good time and reporting to the Company Manager at the start of shift
- Leading and guiding the usher team to ensure a positive, seamless participant experience, working in tandem with the CM
- Confidently leading participant groups around the centre
- Preparing attendance sheets and other administrative tasks
- Supporting usher training and monitoring day-to-day performance alongside the CM
- Keeping reception, toilets and canteen areas clean, tidy and presentable throughout the day
- Knowing and being ready to carry out evacuation and emergency procedures
- Taking responsibility for your own safety and that of everyone in the centre
- Bringing ATT's values of professionalism, inclusivity and care to life
Hours & Contract:
- Casual / Freelance basis
- Shift times typically 08.30am-4.30pm
- Rota published monthly - flexible scheduling, with assignments depending on demand
Pay:
- Training rate - £14.65p/hr
- Full rate - £16.65p/hr
What we're looking for
Essential:
- A friendly, confident, approachable manner
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Previous experience in front‑of‑house, hospitality or events roles
- Reliable, punctual, with strong attention to detail
- Experience supervising or leading a team in a previous role
- Comfortable with some physical activity - moving furniture and set pieces
- A team player who thrives in a fast-paced environment
- Commitment to participant safety and comfort
Nice to have:
- Experience in stage management, event management or backstage roles
- Experience working in a busy, public-facing venue
- Familiarity with radio communication or cueing in a live event setting
- Interest in learning, behavioural safety or immersive experiences
