Front of House Team Member
The Mill at Ulverston
Part-Time & Casual Opportunities
We're looking for friendly, reliable people to join our Front of House team at The Mill at Ulverston.
Whether you've worked in hospitality for years, you're looking for something flexible alongside your other commitments, or you're applying for your first ever job, we'd be very happy to hear from you.
Experience is always useful, but it isn't essential. We can teach you how to carry plates, pour a pint, use a till and learn a menu. What matters much more to us is your attitude – being friendly, reliable, willing to learn and happy to get stuck in.
Choose a working pattern that suits you
We're currently looking for both regular part-time team members and casual team members, so there are two different ways you can work with us.
Regular Part-Time – predictable hours & alternate weekends
If you're looking for regular hours, we'll agree your general availability with you and build you into our rota on a consistent basis.
Our regular team members work an alternate weekend pattern. Hospitality naturally means working some evenings and weekends, but we also think it's important that our team can make plans and enjoy their time away from work.
This could suit you if you want:
- Regular hours each week.
- A more predictable working pattern.
- Alternate weekends off.
- Shifts that can work around college, university, another job or other commitments.
- To become a regular part of the weekly Mill team.
You'll still need some flexibility, particularly around busy periods, holidays and events, but you'll have much more certainty about when you're working – and when you're not.
Casual – choose the shifts that work for you
If you want more flexibility, joining our casual team could be a better fit.
We use a shift bidding system, where available shifts are advertised to our casual team and you can put yourself forward for the ones that work for you.
This can be a great option if you're fitting work around studies, another job, family commitments or simply don't want to commit to the same hours every week.
There's no expectation that you'll work the same pattern as our regular team – you choose which available shifts you want to bid for.
All we ask in return is that once you've committed to a shift, we can rely on you to be there.
What you'll be doing
The Mill is spread across several floors and includes bars, dining areas, our terrace and the Loft, which hosts private parties and events.
We don't recruit people to stand in one particular spot. You'll become part of the wider Mill team and, with training, be able to help wherever you're needed.
Your role may include:
- Welcoming customers and helping them feel looked after from the moment they arrive.
- Taking food and drink orders accurately and confidently.
- Serving food and drinks to tables.
- Working behind the bar and learning how to serve our range of beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks.
- Learning our menus and developing good knowledge of the food and drinks we sell.
- Clearing, cleaning and resetting tables throughout service.
- Keeping bars, customer areas and service stations clean, tidy and well stocked.
- Supporting restaurant service during busy periods.
- Helping with private parties, functions and events in the Loft and elsewhere within the building.
- Preparing areas before service and helping to clean down and reset afterwards.
- Restocking fridges, glassware and other service items.
- Processing payments and learning to use our till systems correctly.
- Following food hygiene, licensing, health & safety and company procedures.
- Working with the rest of the team to keep service running smoothly – particularly when we're busy.
Don't worry if you've never done some – or any – of these things before. That's what training is for.
Your first job? That's absolutely fine.
We are very happy to take applications from people looking for their first job.
You don't need to arrive knowing how a pub or restaurant works. We'll give you the training and support you need to learn the role and build your confidence.
All we ask is that you're willing to learn, listen to the people training you and bring a good attitude to work.
For the right person, hospitality is a brilliant first job. You'll learn how to work as part of a team, communicate with all sorts of people, manage your time, solve problems and keep your head when things get busy – skills you'll take with you wherever you go next.
Who we're looking for
We're looking for people who are:
- Friendly and comfortable talking to people.
- Reliable and punctual.
- Happy working as part of a team.
- Willing to work across different areas of the business.
- Able to stay calm and organised when things get busy.
- Proactive – if you see a dirty table, empty glasses or something that needs doing, you don't just walk past it.
- Willing to learn about our food, beers and other products.
- Flexible about the jobs that need doing during a shift.
- Proud of providing genuinely good customer service.
You don't need to be the loudest or most confident person in the room, either. If you're friendly, interested in people and willing to learn, we'll help you develop the rest.
What you'll get from us
In return, we offer:
- Full training – previous hospitality experience isn't essential.
- Staff discounts across Lancaster Brewery venues.
- A supportive team and experienced managers to learn from.
- Regular, predictable hours with alternate weekends off if you join us on a regular part-time basis.
- Genuine flexibility through our shift bidding system if you join our casual team.
- Opportunities to learn different areas of the business rather than being limited to one role.
- Development and progression opportunities if you'd like to take things further.
Want to progress? You can.
A Front of House role doesn't have to be just a part-time job.
If you enjoy hospitality and want to develop, there are opportunities to take on more responsibility, learn new skills and progress into supervisory and management roles.
We've had plenty of people across our business who started out working Front of House and went on to build their careers with us.
Equally, if you simply want a great part-time job that works alongside the rest of your life, that's absolutely fine too.
We're interested in finding good people and giving them the opportunity to make the role work for them.
Sound like you?
Hospitality isn't a 9–5 job and our busiest times are naturally when other people are out enjoying themselves, so evening and weekend work is part of the job.
But we're trying to offer something that works both ways – whether that's regular hours with alternate weekends off, or the freedom to bid for casual shifts that fit around your life.
Most importantly, we're looking for people who want to be part of a team and help us provide the kind of hospitality The Mill should be known for: friendly, relaxed, efficient and genuinely welcoming.
If that sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you.
Pay: £8.00-£12.71 per hour
