The Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics is seeking to recruit a Laboratory Manager for the Phonetics Laboratory.
The post is for a fixed-term period of 36 months, aiming to start as soon as possible from 1st September 2026, and in any case before 1st January 2027.
About the Role
The successful candidate will support the work of the Phonetics Laboratory in its capacity as a core teaching and research hub of the Faculty. This will include: providing hands-on technical and other support to ensure the smooth running of the Lab’s facilities; supporting the audio- and speech-related research of academic postholders and other researchers; and contributing to the training of researchers and teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
About You
The key requirements are as follows (see further particulars for more details):
- A doctorate in Experimental Phonetics.
- The technical and IT skills and abilities required for the smooth running of the Lab, and to support academic staff and students in a wide range of speech-related experiments.
- Willingness to undertake training and keep up with advances in the field, and disseminate these to the Lab’s researchers.
- Familiarity with good laboratory research practices and safety procedures, and the ability to take responsibility for ensuring these are implemented.
- Strong communication and organisational skills, and ability to work well as part of a team.
- Knowledge of acoustic and articulatory phonetics, elementary phonology, experimental design, and instrumental and quantitative methods, and evidence of the ability to teach these.
- Ability to organise and prioritise own work, seek out information and solve a range of problems (often of a reactive nature), in order to produce work to a high standard within required deadlines.
