A successful secondary school in Southend-on-Sea is looking to appoint a confident, enthusiastic and knowledgeable English Graduate Teacher for a full-time, one-year contract.
This is an excellent opportunity for an English Graduate who is considering a long-term career in education and would like to develop their teaching skills within a supportive secondary school environment.
The School & English Department
The school has a strong focus on academic achievement and provides students with the opportunity to progress through to sixth form and A-Level study. Recent results show 37.7% of A-Level entries achieved A–B grades, with 21.9% achieving A–A**. A-Level students also made above-average progress from their GCSE starting points.
At GCSE level, 21.3% of students achieved grade 5 or above in both English and Maths, with English forming a key part of the school's core curriculum.
As an English Graduate Teacher, you will work alongside an experienced English department and gain first-hand experience of planning, delivering and assessing lessons. This role would be ideal for a graduate looking to build their classroom experience before progressing onto a PGCE or other teacher training programme.
English Graduate Teacher – The Role
- Full-time, one-year contract
- £26,000–£28,000 per annum
- Term time only, plus 3 additional days
- Teaching English across the secondary age range
- Supporting students across English Language and English Literature
- Planning and delivering engaging English lessons
- Supporting students to develop their reading, writing and analytical skills
- Working alongside experienced English Teachers and department leaders
- Developing classroom management and teaching skills
- Gaining excellent experience ahead of future teacher training
English Graduate Teacher – Person Specification
The ideal candidate will have:
- A strong degree in English, English Literature, English Language or a related subject
- Excellent subject knowledge and a genuine enthusiasm for English
- A desire to pursue a career in teaching
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- The confidence to lead and engage a classroom
- A positive and enthusiastic approach to working with young people
- High expectations of student behaviour and achievement
- Previous experience working with young people is desirable, but not essential
