About the role
We're scaling our production to meet growing demand, and safety scales with us. As our named Competent Person, you'll lead Environment, Health & Safety across the whole site, from our R&D and pilot operations through to the commercial scale-up plant we're building. It's a hands-on role in a fast-moving scale-up where no job is too big or small: one day shaping safety strategy for the new plant, the next sorting PPE stock or safety signage. You'll report to the Head of Operations.
We need someone with proven site-based HSE experience who can exercise independent judgement, keep us compliant, and build a strong, transparent safety culture across R&D, production and quality.
What you'll do
- Serve as the company's named Competent Person, providing expert legislative guidance and reporting to the Head of Operations.
- Design and implement safety roadmaps for our expansion, giving expert safety and environmental input into the commercial scale-up plant, and managing the transition from R&D to industrial volumes and the move to multiple-shift patterns.
- Take a no-job-too-big-or-small approach, pivoting between high-level strategy and hands-on execution (e.g. creating safety signage and managing PPE stock).
- Lead the Health & Safety Committee and confidently challenge unsafe behaviours at all levels to build a culture of transparent, continuous learning.
- Ensure full adherence to ISO standards (45001, 14001, 9001) and UK legislation (PUWER, LOLER, COSHH, DSEAR).
- Design and lead formal process safety and Management of Change (MOC) processes, co-designing SOPs with the R&D and Production teams.
- Oversee primary risk assessments and lead root-cause investigations for all accidents and near-misses to prevent recurrence.
- Maintain a strong floor presence through regular audits and safety walkarounds across manufacturing, R&D and quality areas.
- Manage contractor vetting and Permits to Work, and coordinate with regulators and external partners for annual monitoring and inspections.
- Deliver toolbox talks, become a certified trainer (IPAF, Forklift, Face Fit, etc.) and deliver that training in-house to the wider team.
- Manage the company Occupational Health program (third-party) and keep all safety logistics, from first aid kits to PPE inventory, fully maintained.
- Keep all safety records, COSHH data and compliance documentation current, relevant and audit-ready.
- Take ownership of the physical estate, overseeing the upkeep and maintenance of buildings, grounds and site infrastructure across our Jade Business Park units.
- Manage facilities contractors and both planned and reactive maintenance (utilities, HVAC, cleaning, security), and support site space planning and fit-out as we build out the scale-up plant.
Essential criteria
- NEBOSH Level 3 (General Certificate) or equivalent.
- Proven site-based HSE management experience (manufacturing, feed, heavy industry, or logistics).
- Proven ability to exercise discretion and independent judgement across all aspects of an H&S role.
- Skilled in risk assessment, safe systems of work and regulatory compliance.
- Good IT skills, especially spreadsheets and presentation software.
- Good communication and presentation skills.
- Good interpersonal skills, and able to have difficult conversations with team members.
- Interest in sustainability and innovation.
- High level of attention to detail.
- Calm and proactive demeanour.
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of chemical hazards and COSHH forms.
- Experience working for a scale-up or start-up.
- Experience conducting HAZOPs/HAZIDs.
- Forklift licence.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Facilities or estates management experience.
