About Construction Skills Wales
Construction Skills Wales (CSW) is a growing construction workforce development training and vocational assessment provider delivering industry-focused training and GQA-accredited NVQ qualifications as well as access to other training Cscs cards, new business start up grants and job opportunities.
Due to significant growth in our NVQ provision, we are looking to recruit an experienced Construction NVQ Assessor/IQA to join our team.
This is a predominantly remote role. We are focused on quality, learner progression and outcomes rather than where the assessor is physically based. Travel will be required for workplace observations and site visits where remote evidence isnt possible.
The Role
The successful candidate will manage a caseload of construction NVQ learners from registration through to completion.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Managing an allocated caseload of NVQ learners across our qualifications offered
- Conducting initial assessments and assessment planning.
- Supporting learners to understand and gather appropriate workplace evidence.
- Reviewing and assessing portfolios against qualification requirements.
- Conducting professional discussions and other appropriate assessment activities.
- Carrying out workplace observations and site visits where required.
- Providing clear and constructive feedback to learners.
- Maintaining accurate and timely assessment records.
- Ensuring learner portfolios progress efficiently towards completion.
- Using electronic portfolio and remote assessment systems (Quals direct)
- Working closely with CSW's existing assessor, IQA team and management.
- Ensuring assessment decisions meet GQA and qualification requirements.
- Maintaining high standards of assessment quality, compliance and learner support.
IQA Responsibilities
Ideally, the successful candidate will also be IQA qualified and experienced.
IQA forms an important part of CSW's quality assurance process. For an appropriately qualified candidate, the role would also include:
- Conducting interim IQA reviews of other assessors' learner portfolios.
- Identifying any required actions or improvements before portfolios progress further.
- Providing clear feedback to assessors following IQA review.
- Conducting final IQA reviews and sign-off of completed portfolios before they progress to external quality assurance.
- Ensuring assessment evidence and decisions meet GQA requirements before external quality assurance.
An existing IQA qualification is highly desirable but is not essential for an otherwise strong multi trade candidate.
Candidates who are not currently IQA qualified should be willing to undertake the relevant IQA qualification as soon as reasonably possible after joining CSW. CSW is prepared to support the right candidate in achieving this.

- Associated Industrial Services Occupations – Passive Fire Protection
Level 3

We are not looking for somebody who necessarily holds individual trade qualifications across every area listed above.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced construction NVQ assessor with broad construction knowledge and sufficient occupational competence to assess across multiple areas of our provision.
Candidates with experience or qualifications covering several construction occupations are particularly welcome, but we recognise that an individual covering every qualification would be unusual and this is not an essential requirement.
Passive Fire Protection and Occupational Work Supervision are more specialist areas, and competence as well as qualifications to assess either would be needed.
Essential Requirements
Candidates should have:
- A recognised assessor qualification such as A1, CAVA or equivalent.
- Relevant construction industry experience and strong occupational competence.
- Experience assessing construction NVQs or other competence-based construction qualifications.
- The ability and confidence to assess across appropriate areas of construction provision, subject to approval of occupational competence.
- A sound understanding of workplace evidence and competence-based assessment.
- The ability to independently manage an active learner caseload.
- Strong organisation and record-keeping skills.
- Confidence communicating with experienced tradespeople and employers.
- The ability to work effectively remotely and manage their own workload.
- Willingness to travel for workplace observations and learner visits when required.
- A full UK driving licence and access to suitable transport.
- A proven track record
Highly Desirable
- Broad construction experience spanning multiple trades or occupations.
- IQA qualification such as V1, Level 4 IQA or equivalent.
- Experience conducting interim and final IQA reviews of other assessors' portfolios.
- Previous experience working with GQA Qualifications.
- Experience using Quals Direct or similar electronic portfolio systems.
- Experience managing substantial construction NVQ caseloads.
- Passive Fire Protection occupational and/or assessment competence.
- Occupational Work Supervision assessment competence.
The Person We Are Looking For
Technical qualifications are important, but we are particularly interested in somebody who is:
- Reliable and capable of working independently.
- Comfortable being accountable for their own caseload.
- Consistent and objective in their assessment decisions.
- Able to maintain quality while managing significant learner volumes.
- Comfortable working within an established assessment and quality system.
- Practical in their approach to assessment and learner support.
- Interested in developing with CSW as our NVQ provision continues to grow.
Salary and Development
Starting salary: £35,000+
The final package will depend on the candidate's experience, occupational scope, assessment capability, IQA qualifications and experience, and ability to manage a significant learner caseload.
For an exceptional candidate with broad construction assessment experience and strong IQA capability, CSW is prepared to discuss a higher package.
For a strong assessor who does not currently hold an IQA qualification, CSW is prepared to support progression into IQA as part of their development.
This is a long-term opportunity within a growing NVQ operation, with significant potential for increased responsibility as the team and learner caseload expand.
Pay: £35,000.00-£45,000.00 per year
