Fire & Flood Restoration Technician – Water Damage

We are looking for a Fire & Flood Restoration Technician to join our Water Restoration team at DisasterCare East Midlands.
This vacancy is primarily focused on water damage, escape of water and structural drying.
You will attend homes and properties affected by water damage, establish how far moisture has travelled, take accurate readings, install the right drying equipment and monitor the property until the required drying standard has been achieved.
This is hands-on work, but it is also technical. Good restoration depends on accurate assessment, understanding how buildings and materials behave, choosing the right drying approach and recognising when something needs to change.
If you already work in fire and flood restoration, structural drying or water damage, we would particularly like to hear from you. We are also open to strong practical candidates from related property or trade backgrounds who have the ability and attitude to develop technically.
The role
- Attend domestic and other insured properties affected by escape of water, flooding and related damage.
- Carry out initial inspections and assess the extent and movement of moisture within the property.
- Take accurate air, surface and core moisture readings.
- Produce clear photographs and detailed digital inspection reports.
- Develop and follow appropriate drying plans.
- Install dehumidifiers, air movers and specialist drying systems safely.
- Record moisture readings, environmental conditions and equipment performance.
- Monitor structural drying and adjust the approach as conditions change.
- Carry out authorised strip-out where damaged materials cannot be retained.
- Confirm drying goals have been achieved before equipment is removed.
- Complete accurate digital job records using company systems.
- Explain findings, drying processes, next steps and realistic timescales clearly to policyholders.
- Work within the authorised scope and raise unexpected findings or variations promptly.
- Follow RAMS, COSHH, PPE, manual-handling and lone-working procedures.
- Look after company vehicles and specialist equipment.
- Participate in the on-call rota and support surge or major-loss events where required.
- Support the wider restoration operation when required, including assisting with Fire claims, authorised Strip-Out, Logistics and Contents work as the needs of the business require.
The technical duties reflect the existing Water Restoration role, including moisture assessment, drying, strip-out, reporting and wider operational support.
Working hours and flexibility
The core contracted hours are 40 hours per week, normally based around 08:00 to 16:30.
Property restoration does not always fit neatly into those hours. Travel, emergency claims, drying installations, changing site conditions and customer needs can mean earlier starts, later finishes or additional hours when required.
We are looking for people who understand that 16:30 is not an automatic finish time if essential work still needs to be completed, equipment needs to be installed safely, a property needs to be left secure or a job needs to be properly handed over.
Your primary role will be Water Restoration, but you will be part of the wider restoration operation. As the needs of the business require, you will also be expected to assist with Fire claims, authorised Strip-Out, Logistics and Contents work where appropriate.
The role also includes participation in the on-call rota and support during surge and major-loss events.
We value people's time and do not expect additional hours unnecessarily. We do, however, need technicians who are flexible, take ownership of their work and understand the operational nature of the role.
If you are looking for a position where you will only ever work 08:00 to 16:30, this is unlikely to be the right role for you.
Additional hours will be managed in line with your employment terms and working-time requirements. Where appropriate, a separate voluntary 48-hour Working Time opt-out agreement may also be discussed.

You do not simply install equipment and move on.
You understand what you are trying to dry, why a particular drying method is being used and whether it is working.
Your moisture readings, photographs and reports give a clear and accurate picture of the property.
You recognise when conditions change and take action rather than allowing a job to drift.
Equipment is installed safely, correctly and professionally.
You work within the agreed scope and raise anything unexpected before carrying out additional work.
Customers understand what is happening in their property, what you are doing and what happens next.
Your records are accurate, complete and submitted on time.
You take ownership of achieving the right outcome and support the wider team when required.
Experience and qualifications
We are particularly interested in applicants with experience in one or more of the following:
- Fire and flood restoration
- Water damage restoration
- Structural drying
- Moisture assessment or moisture mapping
- Leak detection
- Property restoration
- Construction
- Plumbing
- Property maintenance or another relevant trade
Previous experience using moisture meters, dehumidifiers, air movers, thermal imaging or other specialist restoration equipment would be a strong advantage.
Relevant industry qualifications are desirable, including:
- IICRC Water Restoration Technician (WRT)
- IICRC Applied Structural Drying (ASD)
- BDMA Technician or Senior Technician
- National Flood School or equivalent restoration training
- Trace & Access or other relevant specialist training
A full UK driving licence is essential.
A DBS check is required for the role.
Direct restoration experience and industry qualifications are preferred, but strong practical candidates from relevant related trades will also be considered.
The underlying JD identifies the driving licence as essential and relevant restoration/construction/maintenance experience and WRT/ASD/BDMA qualifications as desirable.
Salary and progression
Starting salary is £27,500, with a structured progression pathway linked to technical competence, experience and certification.
