About the opportunity
West Midlands Summer Houses is an established, expanding family business that has manufactured bespoke, high-quality garden buildings since 1993.
We are looking for an experienced *uPVC door and window fitter—particularly someone with strong door-fitting experience—*who would like to apply their existing skills to the installation of complete garden rooms and summer houses.
You do not need previous experience manufacturing or installing garden buildings. We recognise that experienced uPVC fitters already understand many of the most important parts of our work, including:
Accurately fitting, levelling and adjusting doors and windows
Working with frames, openings, trims and finishing materials
Achieving clean, professional internal and external finishes
Diagnosing alignment and operational issues
Using power tools confidently
Working carefully at customers’ homes
Maintaining high standards of workmanship and presentation
If you can competently install and adjust uPVC doors and windows, the remaining parts of our garden-room installation process should be straightforward to learn with the support of our experienced team.
The role
Our garden rooms and summer houses are manufactured and pre-assembled in sections at our workshop. Your main role will be working as part of an installation team to erect and finish these buildings at customers’ properties.
The position will include:
Installing prefabricated garden-room and summer-house sections
Fitting, levelling and adjusting uPVC doors and windows
Completing trims, seals and finishing work to a high standard
Using power tools and hand tools safely and competently
Checking that the completed building is level, secure and professionally finished
Speaking politely and professionally with customers
Helping load the installation vehicle at the workshop for the following day
Working with the team to complete installations efficiently and on schedule
Travelling to customer sites throughout the country
Most working days will be spent on site. After returning to the workshop, the team will normally load the vehicle ready for the next morning’s installation.
Some sites involve carrying large or heavy building sections from the vehicle to the installation area. You will always be working as part of a team, but applicants must be comfortable with the physical nature of the role.
Training and progression
We are not expecting applicants to arrive with years of garden-building experience.
We will provide practical training in our installation methods, building system and required standards. Your starting salary and progression within the advertised range will depend on:
Your existing door, window, carpentry or installation experience
The quality and accuracy of your work
Your ability to solve fitting and finishing issues
How quickly you learn the complete garden-room installation process
Your reliability, attitude and contribution to the team
Your ability to take responsibility as your experience develops
For the right person, this is an opportunity to move beyond fitting individual doors and windows and develop the skills needed to install complete, high-end garden rooms.
What we are looking for
The successful applicant should have:
Professional experience fitting uPVC doors and windows, with strong door-fitting experience preferred
Experience fitting doors and windows at customers’ homes
Confidence adjusting hinges, locks, keeps and door alignment
A good understanding of accurate measuring, levelling, sealing, trimming and finishing
Experience using power tools and hand tools
A keen eye for detail
Good timekeeping and reliability
A polite and professional manner with customers
The ability to work well as part of a team
A flexible attitude toward different sites, journeys and installation requirements
A full UK driving licence, preferably held for several years
The ability and confidence to drive a 3.5-tonne vehicle, or willingness to do so
The ability to safely undertake the physical duties involved in carrying and installing building sections
Experience in carpentry, joinery, conservatory installation, modular buildings, timber structures or garden rooms would be advantageous, but it is not essential.
What to expect
This is an outdoor, hands-on role involving nationwide travel, different working environments and regular contact with customers.
Some installations require early starts, so this position will not suit someone who struggles with early mornings or nationwide travel. However, it could be an excellent fit if you enjoy practical work, visiting different parts of the country, meeting new people and seeing a complete, high-quality building come together at the end of each job.
We have a hardworking, friendly team where good humour and plenty of banter are part of the working day—but so are professionalism, teamwork and pride in the finished product.
What we offer
Salary of £25,000–£35,000 per year, depending on experience and capability
A full-time, permanent position
Training in complete garden-room and summer-house installation
The opportunity to develop beyond door and window fitting
Long-term job security within an established family business
Varied work at customer locations around the country
A friendly and experienced team
On-site parking
We are looking for someone who wants to become a long-term member of the company and grow into the role. Many members of our team have stayed with us for years, and providing genuine job security to the right person is very important to us.
To apply, please send your CV together with a short explanation of your door and window fitting experience, the types of installations you have completed, and whether you are comfortable driving a 3.5-tonne vehicle.
Pay: £27,000.00-£35,000.00 per year
