Job summary: To work as a Deputy Manager at our successful Wharton Day Nursery, Winsford.
To support the Manager with the role as Safeguarding Lead in their absence.
Main duties include:
- Planning, preparing and delivering quality teaching opportunities using the EYFS framework effectively, offering an appropriate level of support and stimulation within a safe and caring environment.
- Support practitioners with their key children and act as a key person to a group of children if working in a preschool setting.
- Ensure room leaders and practitioners are following the daily routine that is set for the room.
- Ensuring small group / larger group activities are engaging and purposeful for children appropriate to their stage of development and needs.
- Monitoring staffs time keeping daily reporting any lateness to the Manager.
- Manager child / adult ratios daily throughout the rooms in the setting to comply with EYFS statutory requirements.
- Liaise closely with parents/carers maintaining strong partnerships and communication ensuring that the individual needs and interests of children in the setting are met (in conjunction with other team members) .
- Work alongside the Manager to ensure continuity of all paperwork in accordance with S4YC Early Years settings formats. Completing administration and record keeping supporting the Manager on a daily basis.
- To monitor and complete cohort tracking on children’s development within the setting to establish gaps in learning and support staff with planning for next steps
- To meet all aspects of the Early Years Foundation Stage and subsequently any legal documents referred to within the EYFS framework.
- To ensure the provision of a high-quality environment to meet the needs of individual children having an awareness of any disabilities, family cultures and medical histories. Familiarising yourself with relevant play and learning intervention plans that are in place.
- To advise manager of any concerns, e.g. over children, parents, the safety of the environment, preserving confidentiality as necessary.
- To meet the expectations set out in both government guidance and legislation, as a supporting safeguarding lead, developing the skills and competences that are effective in their role and not just compliant.
- To have a good understanding and sound knowledge of what risks may present to children and how this may be manifested.
- To underpin the implementation of policies and procedures with clarity and good communication systems so that everyone, including staff, parents and children, can engage in processes that safeguard and protect all children.
- Help and support staff to learn to become competent practitioners by helping them to identify abuse and neglect by encouraging them to respond appropriately as soon as concerns arise.
- To keep completely confidential any information regarding the children, their families or other staff that is acquired as part of the job
- Administering first aid when necessary.
- To be flexible within working practices of the setting, undertaking other responsible duties where needed, such as changing nappies, domestic tasks, preparation of snack meals, cleansing of equipment, etc ensuring that hygiene, health and safety standards are met, Monitoring and maintaining a healthy, safe and secure working environment at all times.
- Developing and maintaining good communication with all members of the company, parents, schools, CWAC and Ofsted.
- To work alongside the manager and staff team to ensure that the setting’s philosophy is fulfilled.
- Work closely and in harmony with the Manager so that you are able to act on behalf of the Manager whenever necessary.
- Have and understanding of management administration and record keeping in order to assist the manager when necessary.
- Lead, supervise, observe and monitor staff within the Early Years setting on a daily basis, providing support and modelling good Early Years practice to staff.
- Report any concerns for disciplinary issues with the support from senior management
- Support all staff and engage in a good staff team, building team spirit and ensuring that each member of staff feels valued and included.
- Undertake appropriate and relevant training.
- To attend and be involved in staff meetings on a regular basis.
- To read, understand and adhere to all of the company’s policies and procedures relevant to your role and the safe running of the setting.
- To undertake peer observations on staff within the setting and feedback into supervision meetings.
- To undertake supervision meetings with your line Manager

Person specification
Essential qualities
- Experience of working with 0 to 4 year olds
- At least 2 years experience of working in a childcare setting
- Experience of working in a leadership or management capacity
- Experience of delivering equal opportunities in an early years setting
- Experience of working with children and families
- Appropriate Level 3 qualification or greater.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of the Early Years Foundation stage
Desirable qualities
- Experience of working with other agencies and professionals
- Appropriate safeguarding and Child Protection training. L3 for Safeguarding lead.
- Current First Aid Certificate
- Food Hygiene Certificate
- Ability to use IT based resources to support education and practitioner administration
- Experience of working in baby, Toddler or preschool room in applying for Children Centre setting
