Our Staff and subcontractors are important to us and we continually invest in training and apprenticeships to grow and develop our workforce.
We have 4 current apprentices and 25 Apprentices have successfully completed their training and qualifications with our company over recent years, furthering their career. We are now looking to add another two apprentices to join our friendly and approachable team.
Training and development – What does the apprenticeship look like?
The training will consist of 14 blocks of one-week training, over an 18 month period at Pencoed College, along with working with an experienced roofer on site. You will attend college with other apprentices from other firms.
The apprenticeship leads to a Level 3 in Roof Slating and Tiling on the Welsh Apprenticeship Framework. You will be continually assessed on each module to ensure you have the correct knowledge and understanding and to gather evidence that you can carry out the tasks required. We also invest in your training. Alongside the apprenticeship, there are other health and safety related courses to complete including health and safety awareness, abrasive wheels, manual handling, asbestos awareness and fire awareness etc.
The learning does not stop there with continuing training over many years with the opportunity to earn a significant salary on qualification and further career opportunities exist in the future to progress to supervisor and manager level.
Duties
You will be working alongside and supervised by an experienced roofer daily on new housing developments throughout South Wales.
This will involve assisting an experienced roofer laying the roofing underlay and timber battens, installing ventilation components, laying and fixing various concrete interlocking roof tiles, completing the roof lines (such as verges, ridges, eaves, hips and valleys).
To attend college training sessions to gain technical and practical knowledge and skills, applying the knowledge gained at college into practice on site. Building a portfolio of evidence to achieve your qualification and your Mentor and Supervisor will help with this.
Working on site to fit in with the company’s customer demands. To work safely at all times and comply with Health and safety guidelines.
Requirements and skills
You will need a full driving license and vehicle to meet up with your roofing team at an agreed place every day, you will be able to travel with them to sites from this location. Most of our teams are based in the Bridgend, Merthyr Tydfil or Rhondda area, so living in or close to these areas is essential.
You will need to have passed the CSCS health and safety test and preferably have a CSCS card to enable you to work on site if successful prior to starting work. We can assist with this requirement.
Good time keeping and attendance is vital. The individual will need to be flexible and open to change, able to work well with others, keen and willing to learn, have good attention to detail, a good level of fitness and ability to work at height. You do not need work experience of roofing or construction, but basic knowledge would help.
Qualifications required for entry onto apprenticeship are currently a foundation core in Construction, preferably Roofing and Carpentry. Minimum grades in English Language and Numeracy as you will need communication, reading and writing skills along with basic maths for calculating dimensions on the roof. Alternatively an entry point is three years experience in a construction role.
Pay: £10.85-£12.71 per hour
