Job Overview
The Material Handler is responsible for handling, moving, loading, and unloading materials by hand and using a variety of material handling equipment. Employees will be responsible for receiving, kitting, delivering, and storing all materials in a timely fashion while maintaining superior quality and accuracy. Material handlers are responsible for parts from the time they are delivered until production have consumed the parts therefore must be proactive and reactive to production issues and material issues to resolve or escalate to the relevant person to minimize disruption to production. Material damage must be minimized through correct loading and packaging methods and must escalate to the correct individuals if there are any issues. Responsibilities
- Load, unload and move products and materials throughout the yards.
- Match deliveries to paperwork to ensure stock accuracy.
- Operate winches/ FLT’s/ Cranes and other loading devices to load and unload materials onto and off trucks, containers, vans etc.
- Operate industrial trucks, cranes, loaders, and other necessary equipment to transport materials to and from transportation vehicles and store and retrieve materials in the yard.
- Co-ordinate the timely flow of material between the yard and production areas, ensuring materials are presented in the correct packaging with necessary stickers and kanban cards if required.
- Put parts into the correct locations and ensure items are correctly stored and managed with FIFO using old stock first.
- Provide information on material shortages to Purchasers/ Line Managers in a timely manner.
- Attend production meetings relevant to their area, attend kanban walk sheet meetings and highlight issues and take note of production issues relevant to material handling and parts.
- Safety inspections on equipment, Racking, goods in area and reporting all good spots, near misses, accidents using reporting methods.
- Pick, Kit, and pack parts required for production or sales orders.
- Receive all incoming inventory stock – identify it, tag it, transfer to designated area in line with the Kanban processes and use the system to book in/ transfer stock/ print labeling.
- Ensure small part bins are replenished according to collection schedule.
- Keep the work area clean and organized. Remove all rubbish & debris on a regular basis.
- As material handlers will be dealing with suppliers/ drivers/ customers, you are required to always act accordingly and respectfully as a representative of the company.
- Attend training courses required to complete the material handling job function.
- Complete any special projects as required. May be assigned to other areas of Operations, based on business or customer requirements.
Desired Education and Background
- Educated to GCSE standard or equivalent along with at least one year experience in a similar role.
- Valid forklift license achieved through an outside certification.
- Strong multitasking and communication skills•Experience with Inventory Control systems
- Working knowledge of lean manufacturing is advantageous.
- Ability to work as a team and independently.
