Domestics work as part of a small team with responsibility for the cleanliness of allocated areas of a boarding house. There will be times when they will be expected to work unsupervised and they will be expected to be flexible and cover for absent staff when required.
Domestics will be expected to be organised and have an attention to detail and must continue to be capable of meeting the physical requirements of the post.
Domestics will work in the boarding house(s) under the day-to-day supervision of the Housekeeper/Matron.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF DOMESTIC
Key Responsibilities
The following summary of duties is intended to assist the successful applicant in their respective responsibilities:
- To clean allocated areas e.g. dining room, bathrooms, dormitories, classrooms and stairways. The type of cleaning will depend on the area but may involve emptying bins, sweeping, mopping, dusting, polishing and vacuuming. This list is not exhaustive.
- To change bedding if required and occasionally turn or change mattresses.
- In a Boarding House to help set tables and to assist serving food at meal times in the house. This usually involves putting serving dishes on the table and clearing away to the kitchen afterwards.
- To keep up to date with cleaning methods and to undertake regular Health & Safety training, as required.
- To be able to lift reasonably heavy items such as cleaning equipment, laundry bags etc.
- To periodically clean the insides of windows. Sometimes this might involve using a stepladder.
- To immediately report any defects or safety hazards and any accidents, however small, to the Housekeeper/Matron.
- To undertake any other tasks when reasonably requested by the Housekeeper/Matron.
PERSON SPECIFICATION AND KEY QUALITIES
The successful applicant will have/be:
- Experience of working in domestic services, housekeeping or a similar function.
- An understanding of cleaning practice and safety procedures.
- Demonstrate a positive and flexible approach to work.
- Work both individually and as part of a team, contributing to the team spirit.
- Use their initiative.
- Demonstrate high levels of energy, enthusiasm and reliability.
- Good attention to detail combined with own high standards with the ability to achieve and maintain standards consistently.
- Prioritise tasks and manage time well/productively
- Prepared to be flexible with the requirements of the role in order to meet the needs of the service.
BENEFITS, TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Start Date - As soon as possible.
Hours of Work - This role is a 30 hours per week, working 9am-2pm, Monday-Saturday, 52 weeks of the year and such other hours as are reasonably necessary to meet the needs of the College and the demands of the role.
Salary - The Salary will be £19,828.00 (gross) per annum - this salary is for 52 week salary. The FTE salary is £26,436.00 (gross) per annum.
For this role, during term time you will work at a designated boarding house, and outside of termtime you will be expected to work in other boarding houses supporting Summer Lets and any other reasonable department such as Facilities or Laundry.
Salary is paid monthly, in arrears, to a nominated bank account in 12 equal payments. Salary levels are reviewed on 1 September annually and this appointment will be next reviewed in September 2027.
