Store Manager – Geek Out Hull
Location: Hull, East Yorkshire
Job Type: Full-Time
Salary: £30,000 + performance bonus
Position Overview
Geek Out is expanding, and we are looking for an energetic, commercially minded, and community-focused Store Manager to lead the launch and daily operation of our brand-new Hull location.
As Store Manager, you will be the driving force behind the store’s commercial success, team leadership, and community experience. You will cultivate a welcoming, inclusive space for fans of pop culture merchandise, comics, tabletop gaming, trading card games (TCGs), and collectibles. A central element of this role involves overseeing pre owned buying and selling - managing the intake, authentication, grading, and resale processing of pre owned items bought directly from customers.
Key Responsibilities
Pre-Owned Stock & Trade-In Management
- Lead and oversee the in-store buying / trade-in service for pre-owned goods, including Pokemon singles, comics, statues, figures, retro video games, and collectibles.
- Accurately evaluate, grade, and value second-hand items brought in by customers using live market data and internal pricing guidelines.
- Authenticate incoming items to identify and prevent the acquisition of counterfeit cards, reproduction goods, or stolen property.
- Process trade-in stock into the POS/inventory system promptly, ensuring items are cleaned, tested, sleeved, priced, and placed on display for immediate resale.
- Ensure strict compliance with local council regulations and UK statutory requirements regarding second-hand trading, including record-keeping and customer ID verification.
- Train and mentor floor staff on grading standards, trade-in procedures, and professional customer communication during buyback negotiations.
Store Leadership & Team Management
- Recruit, onboard, train, and mentor a high-performing retail team passionate about pop culture, gaming, and customer service.
- Set clear performance expectations, deliver regular feedback, and conduct annual appraisals.
- Build efficient staff rotas to optimise floor coverage during peak trading hours, trade-in desks, and community events.
Commercial & Financial Performance
- Take full accountability for store P&L, sales targets, key performance indicators (KPIs), and budget control.
- Analyse sales trends, margin reports, and footfall data to optimise product positioning and promotional strategies.
- Manage overall stock control, shrinkage prevention, regular audits, and replenishment processes across new and pre-owned inventory.
Community Engagement & Event Management
- Oversee and champion the store’s event calendar (e.g., TCG tournaments, quiz events, launch parties).
- Build strong ties with local gaming communities, universities, and pop-culture groups across Hull.
- Maintain a vibrant local social media presence for the Hull branch to drive footfall and promote daily stock drops.
Retail Operations & Customer Experience
- Maintain high visual merchandising standards in line with brand guidelines.
- Ensure exemplary customer service across the team, creating a friendly, knowledgeable, and safe environment for all customers.
- Oversee store health and safety compliance, daily cashing up, banking, and security procedures.
Key Requirements
- Hobby Knowledge: A genuine interest in geek culture (TCGs, board games, tabletop RPGs, video games, collectibles, pop culture merchandise).
- Outstanding communication and negotiation skills when dealing with customer buybacks.
- Strong organisational skills with keen attention to detail when grading and cataloguing items.
- Adaptable, proactive, and calm under pressure during busy trade periods or store events.
- Retail Management Experience: As a Store Manager or Assistant Store Manager in a fast-paced retail environment.
- Leadership: Proven ability to build, motivate, and manage a diverse team.
- Commercial Acumen: Strong understanding of retail metrics (margin analysis, conversion, inventory turn) and budget management.
