We're recruiting a Revenues Assistant to support the accurate administration and maintenance of Council Tax and Business Rates records. This role sits within the Revenues & Benefits Team and supports payment processing, reconciliations, customer enquiries, system administration, reporting, and the day-to-day delivery of an effective revenues service.
This position suits someone organised, numerate, IT-literate, and experienced in a busy office environment, with confidence using computerised systems, handling confidential information, responding to routine customer enquiries, and maintaining accurate financial and customer records.
About the Role:
As a Revenues Assistant, you'll provide high-quality administrative and financial support to the Revenues & Benefits service, ensuring Council Tax and Business Rates information is maintained accurately, customer payments are correctly allocated, Direct Debit instructions are processed efficiently, and service procedures are followed correctly.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Processing and maintaining Council Tax and Business Rates records accurately and promptly
- Setting up, amending, and cancelling Direct Debit instructions, including processing unpaid Direct Debits in line with BACS guidance
- Preparing and verifying routine changes to Council Tax and Business Rates liabilities
- Monitoring and allocating customer payments to the correct accounts and accounting years
- Providing initial guidance to customers by telephone and in writing on straightforward enquiries
- Indexing and processing incoming correspondence using the document management system
- Maintaining accurate, confidential, and up-to-date customer and service records
- Producing regular and ad hoc reports, including statistical and performance information
- Extracting, manipulating, and presenting system data in a clear and usable format
- Running Revenues and Benefits system reports and print jobs, liaising with IT where required
- Supporting system testing, identifying straightforward issues, and preparing user guidance where appropriate
- Maintaining and updating system documentation, databases, spreadsheets, and other service records
- Liaising with internal teams and software suppliers to identify and resolve system issues
- Carrying out regular reconciliations for Council Tax and Business Rates and investigating discrepancies
- Preparing purchase orders and invoices for appropriate authorisation
- Following data protection, confidentiality, quality control, and service procedures at all times
- Carrying out other reasonable duties as required
What We're Looking For:
We're looking for someone reliable, detail-focused, organised, and confident using computerised systems within a structured local government or busy office environment.
You'll Ideally Have:
Must-Have Requirements:
- Eligible to work in the UK
- Minimum of 2 years' work history and references
- GCSEs in English/Welsh and Mathematics at grades A–C, or equivalent
- Good IT skills and confidence using computerised systems
- Strong working knowledge of databases and Windows-based software
- Understanding of data protection requirements and handling confidential information
- Experience working in a busy office environment
- Experience dealing with routine customer enquiries by telephone and written communication
- Ability to manage system information and present data in an appropriate format
- Good judgement and a practical, solution-focused approach
- Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively with colleagues and customers
- Ability to work effectively, adapt to change, and contribute to continuous service improvement
- Ability to maintain accurate records and manage information effectively
Nice-to-Have Requirements:
- NVQ Level 2 in Business Administration or an equivalent qualification
- Basic knowledge of Council Tax and Business Rates legislation, regulations, and codes of practice
- Previous experience in a Revenues and Benefits environment
- Experience extracting data using advanced reporting tools and converting it into usable formats
- Experience processing Direct Debits, including new instructions, amendments, cancellations, and unpaid payments
- Welsh language skills in reading and speaking to Level 1
- Experience supporting system development, testing, or implementation
