Electoral Services Assistant – Admin & Clerical
Hours: 37 Hours Per Week, Mon–Fri (Condensed hours can be considered)
Contract: 12 Weeks Temporary (with potential extension)

Rate: PAYE £15.51 per hour

About the role
We're recruiting an Electoral Services Assistant to support the Council's busy Democracy, Elections and Information team. This is a key administrative role, ideal for someone organised, proactive, and confident working in a fast-paced environment with sensitive information.
You'll be responsible for the daily assessment and processing of electoral registration applications, maintaining the Electoral Register, and supporting the conduct of elections and the annual canvass.
What you'll be doing
- Updating and maintaining properties and electors on the Electoral Register database
- Processing individual electoral registration applications in line with statutory requirements
- Handling sensitive information including National Insurance numbers, passports, and driving licence details
- Scanning and processing electoral forms (Household Enquiry, Invitation to Register, Postal/Proxy Vote applications, etc.)
- Undertaking data matching and data mining against Council Tax records to identify potential electors
- Assisting with the production and distribution of the Register of Electors and monthly updates
- Supporting the Annual Canvass, including doorstep canvassing of non-responders
- Assisting with recruitment of election staff and compliance checks
- Booking venues for elections and processing related payments
- Liaising with members of the public, Councillors, MPs, and political agents
Requirements
We're seeking someone with strong organisational skills, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to work under pressure.
You'll ideally have:
- Good standard of English and Maths
- Experience with Microsoft Office and high IT literacy
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Ability to plan and organise workload to meet deadlines
- Knowledge of East Hertfordshire district (desirable)
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends during election periods
- Full Driving Licence
