Learning Support Assistant

We are seeking a committed, resilient and enthusiastic Learning Support Assistant to join our dedicated team at a specialist secondary alternative provision in Southampton from September.
Working with Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 pupils, you will support young people who have experienced barriers to learning in mainstream education. Many of our students have social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs and may display challenging behaviour. We are looking for someone who can build positive relationships, remain calm under pressure and help create a safe, supportive learning environment where every student has the opportunity to succeed.
The Role
As a Learning Support Assistant, you will:
- Support students in the classroom, in small groups and through 1:1 interventions.
- Work alongside teaching staff to deliver engaging learning activities.
- Help manage behaviour using positive, restorative approaches.
- Prepare and organise learning resources.
- Encourage students to develop confidence, resilience and independence.
- Contribute to creating a nurturing and inclusive environment where pupils can thrive.
About You
The successful candidate will:
- Have experience working with children or young people in a similar setting, such as an alternative provision, specialist school, PRU or with pupils with SEMH needs.
- Be confident in supporting students who may present challenging behaviour.
- Be patient, resilient and able to build trusting relationships.
- Have high expectations of both themselves and the young people they support.
- Be a positive team player with excellent communication skills.
- Be committed to helping pupils achieve positive outcomes.
Essential Requirements
- GCSE English and Maths (Grade C/4 or above).
- Previous experience working in a similar educational or behavioural support setting.
- A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable young people to reach their potential.
