After-School Carer & English Tutor – Autistic Young Person
Location: Southampton
Salary: £13.50 per hour
Hours: 10–16 hours per week

About the Role
We are looking for a caring, patient and reliable After-School Carer and Tutor to provide support to a 13-year-old autistic young person in his family home in Southampton.
The role combines one-to-one tutoring, life-skills development and supportive care. We are looking for someone who can build a positive relationship with the young person and create a calm, encouraging environment where he can develop his confidence, communication and independence.
This would be particularly suited to someone with experience in education, tutoring, childcare, social care, special educational needs or supporting autistic children and young people.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-to-one support after school in the family home.
- Support learning in English language, reading, writing and grammar.
- Assist with homework and age-appropriate educational activities.
- Develop practical life skills and independence through everyday activities.
- Encourage communication, confidence and positive engagement.
- Provide appropriate supervision and companionship.
- Follow established routines and individual support needs.
- Adapt activities and communication to suit the young person's learning style and abilities.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality.
- Communicate appropriately with the family regarding progress, activities and any concerns.
About You

- Confident in English language and grammar.
- Able to make learning interesting and accessible.
- A good communicator with a calm and positive approach.
- Reliable and able to commit to regular after-school hours.
- Comfortable working independently within a family home.
Previous experience working with autistic children or young people is desirable. Experience in tutoring, education, childcare, social care or support work would also be beneficial.
A formal teaching qualification is not essential for the right candidate. We are primarily looking for someone with the right attitude, patience, communication skills and ability to engage positively with the young person.
Hours
The position is approximately 10–16 hours per week, primarily after school on weekdays.
The exact days and hours can be discussed with the successful candidate and may vary depending on the family's requirements.
Pay
£13.50 per hour
Safeguarding and Recruitment
This role involves working directly with a young person and is therefore subject to appropriate safeguarding and safer recruitment checks.
An enhanced DBS check will be required, or the successful candidate must be willing to undergo the appropriate DBS process.
References and evidence of relevant experience may also be requested as part of the recruitment process.
