About the Role
Our prestigious client is looking for an experienced and motivated Intermediate Mechanical Design Engineer to join our growing team. This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer looking to develop their technical and project management skills within a supportive, forward-thinking environment where talent is encouraged and career development is actively supported.
Based from our Peterborough office, the role will also involve hybrid working and regular attendance at client sites across London.
You will join a small but dynamic team, working on a varied portfolio of projects while developing your technical expertise, digital design capabilities and project management experience.
Key ResponsibilitiesMechanical Design & Technical Delivery
- Design mechanical building services systems, including:
- HVAC – heating, ventilation and air conditioning
- Domestic hot and cold water systems
- Drainage systems
- BMS coordination
- Produce and review engineering calculations, specifications and technical reports.
- Develop system layouts, schematics and detailed construction drawings using AutoCAD and/or Revit MEP.
- Undertake site surveys, inspections and site visits.
- Monitor site works and provide technical support where required.
- Prepare technical notes, reports and design documentation.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant industry standards, including CIBSE Guides, British/European Standards and Building Regulations.
Project Management
- Manage projects from concept through to completion.
- Coordinate with architects, structural engineers, contractors and other multidisciplinary teams.
- Manage project deliverables, programmes and agreed budgets.
- Attend client and design team meetings, providing technical input and support.
- Manage your own workload and maintain an accurate forward plan.
- Monitor project progress and report changes, scope variations or potential issues to the appropriate manager.
- Work effectively within agreed time allocations and project deadlines.
Sustainability & Innovation
- Incorporate energy-efficient and low-carbon solutions into mechanical designs.
- Support energy modelling and system optimisation.
- Consider sustainability requirements throughout the design process.
- Work with recognised sustainability frameworks such as BREEAM, LEED and NABERS, where applicable.
- Contribute ideas that improve the efficiency, sustainability and performance of building services solutions.
Team Support & Development
- Provide technical support and guidance to junior engineers and technicians.
- Assist with reviewing and quality-checking design outputs.
- Share knowledge and contribute to the development of the wider engineering team.
- Support the training and development of less experienced colleagues.
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
- Develop positive and professional relationships with clients and project stakeholders.
- Act as a technical point of contact on assigned projects.
- Prepare and present design proposals and technical information.
- Attend meetings and contribute confidently to technical discussions.
Compliance & Quality Assurance
- Ensure all designs meet relevant health, safety and legislative requirements, including CDM Regulations.
- Contribute to design risk assessments and appropriate mitigation measures.
- Follow internal QA procedures and maintain consistently high standards of technical output.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant UK building regulations and industry standards.
Skills & CompetenciesTechnical
- Strong understanding of mechanical building services design and HVAC systems.
- Experience using AutoCAD and/or Revit MEP.
- Experience with design and engineering calculation software such as IES, Hevacomp or similar.
- Good understanding of energy efficiency and low-carbon technologies.
- Ability to undertake engineering calculations and accurately size mechanical systems.
- Good knowledge of UK Building Regulations and relevant industry standards.
- Understanding of BIM processes and digital engineering would be advantageous.

Qualifications & Experience
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a related discipline.
- Previous experience within mechanical building services design.
- Ideally 3–7 years' relevant industry experience, depending on level and capability.
- Working towards professional registration with CIBSE, IMechE or an equivalent professional body is desirable.
- Experience delivering mechanical building services projects from design through to completion.
- Good knowledge of UK Building Regulations, CIBSE guidance and relevant industry standards.

Additional desirable experience includes:
- BIM Level 2 / ISO 19650 processes
