A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on AI and data-centre energy systems.
The post holder will be located in West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.
This role will conduct research on the energy, carbon and water implications of AI computing and data-centre infrastructure. The position holder will develop quantitative and data-driven methods to link AI workloads and token generation with computing hardware, data-centre electricity demand, cooling requirements, grid carbon intensity and local water-system conditions. The research aims to develop engineering metrics, assessment frameworks and operational strategies for more energy-efficient and low-carbon AI data centres. The role will be based in the Power Electronics Research Group and will contribute to the Group's research on efficient electrical infrastructure for high-density computing, including power conversion and delivery, thermal management, grid interaction and low-carbon operation.
Applicants must have, or be close to obtaining, a PhD in Electrical Engineering or Information Engineering, with a focus on AI computing and data-centre energy systems.
Applicants should have expertise and knowledge of AI computing and data-centre energy systems, including AI workloads, power conversion and delivery, cooling and thermal management, grid interaction, and energy, carbon and water performance. They should also have skills in energy, carbon and water assessment, quantitative modelling and large-scale data analysis, with proficiency in Python, MATLAB or equivalent computational tools.
Applicants should have experience in applying quantitative and data-driven methods to one or more of the following areas: AI computing and data-centre energy systems; power systems or power electronics; cooling and thermal management; grid interaction; or energy, carbon and water assessment.
Applicants should have at least two accepted/published journal papers.
Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.
Salary Ranges:
- Research Assistant: £33,002 - £35,608
- Research Associate: £37,694 - £46,049
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 6 months in the first instance.
