Head of Finance
Huboo Group · Severn Beach, Bristol · On site
The role
We are a private equity backed logistics technology group. Six fulfilment sites across the UK (Bristol, Manchester and London), Spain (Madrid), the Netherlands (Eindhoven) and the USA (Dallas Fort Worth, Texas), around 325 e-commerce clients anchored in a loyal health and wellness base, a growing software business in Sorted servicing large enterprise retailers as well as scaling mid market brands, and 300 people with real commitment and spirit - they have carried this business through a hard period and they are the reason it is still here.
We came out of a restructuring in December 2024, with institutional backing, and have taken annual losses from £25m+ to breakeven through a sequence of operational and commercial transformation. The next phase is realising the trajectory from surviving to scaling at profit, and from a UK and European fulfilment operation to a global commerce platform, with an aspiration to create a $1bn company.
We are looking for an experienced operator to lead the finance function through that.
What you would do
Own the numbers, and make them ones people can rely on. We are rebuilding our unit economics: what an order costs to pick, pack and ship, at each site, so that every price is built from a cost rather than from precedent. That work is under way and you would lead it.
Run the group financial cycle properly. Monthly management information on a published timetable, one definition per measure, forecasts that reconcile to actuals, and a board pack that stands up to challenge.
Hold the cash. We operate an asset-based lending facility and a seasonal business where the fourth quarter generates most of the year's cash. Cashflow is a daily discipline here, not a monthly report.
Lead the team. Seven people today across the group and Sorted, and you would develop them. We also want someone who will invest in the next generation more widely — through Huboo Academy, Huboo First, and Huboo Labs, our robotics and supply chain partnership with the University of Bristol.
Work with the auditors, the lenders and the board. Statutory audit is live, and you would own that relationship alongside the Board Operating Partner.
What we are looking for
A qualified accountant with senior finance experience in an operating business - manufacturing, logistics, distribution or similar. Somebody who has stood on a warehouse floor and understands where cost actually sits. A good degree, 2:1 or better, is required, and training at a recognised accounting firm is preferred.
Genuine strength in costing and pricing. If you have built a product costing model, or taken a business from gross margin as a mystery to gross margin as a management tool, that is the most relevant thing on your CV.
Multi-entity and multi-currency experience. We report in sterling and operate in euros, heading to dollars.
Someone who works well with operational colleagues - site managers, commercial, technology - and can explain a number to people who do not want to hear it. Calm, straightforward, no ego. We have a good senior team and we are looking for someone who will fit into it rather than reorganise around themselves.
And the judgement to say when something is wrong, plainly and early, and then get on with fixing it.
Location Severn Beach, Bristol. On site, with flexibility. This is not a remote role - the work is where the operation is. Ideas and generations come together and sparks fly on the floor not on Teams.
Reporting to Executive Chairman, working alongside the Board Operating Partner and Managing Director.
Package Competitive base, plus participation in the group equity scheme.
To apply Send a CV. If you would rather have a conversation first, that is fine too.
