Payroll Manager
Location: Carlisle and Workington (Lake District area)
Salary: Up to £40,000 + 17% performance-related bonus

The Opportunity
We’re working in partnership with a growing and reputable firm to recruit an experienced Payroll Manager.
This role offers the chance to take ownership of a varied client portfolio, delivering accurate and compliant payroll services while building strong client relationships and maintaining high service standards.
The Role
You’ll be responsible for managing the end-to-end payroll function for a range of clients across different sectors.
The role requires a strong understanding of payroll processes and legislation, along with a proactive approach to ensuring everything is delivered accurately and on time.
Key Responsibilities

Managing payroll for a varied and potentially high-volume client portfolio

Processing end-to-end payroll, including starters, leavers, salary changes, and statutory deductions

Collating and processing payroll data such as timesheets, expenses, and adjustments

Calculating PAYE, National Insurance, pensions, and statutory payments (SMP, SSP, SPP)

Processing salary sacrifice schemes and annual pay reviews

Preparing and submitting RTI filings and pension submissions

Liaising with HMRC, pension providers, and external bodies

Ensuring the accuracy and integrity of payroll data and systems

Maintaining audit records and supporting compliance requirements

Producing payroll reports and management information

Responding to client queries in a professional and timely manner

Supporting payroll system improvements and process enhancements
About You
-
At least 5 years’ payroll experience (practice or payroll bureau preferred)

Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation including PAYE, NI, and pensions

Experience managing multiple clients or high-volume payrolls

Confident using payroll systems, with good Excel and IT skills

High attention to detail and strong organisational skills

Comfortable dealing with clients and building relationships

Proactive and reliable, with a solutions-focused approach
