An excellent opportunity is available for a Consultant Cardiologist with an interest in Echocardiography and Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) to join an established and well-supported Cardiology department in Scotland.
This is a full-time, 12-month fixed-term replacement Consultant post, joining a large multidisciplinary Cardiology team. The role combines general adult cardiology with specialist responsibilities in Transoesophageal Echocardiography (TOE), Adult Congenital Heart Disease and advanced cardiac imaging.
The successful candidate will:
- Provide comprehensive General Adult Cardiology services.
- Participate in the inpatient Cardiology service and General Adult Cardiology Receiving.
- Participate in the 1:11 Consultant on-call rota, including weekend ward rounds.
- Conduct three outpatient clinics per week, including General Cardiology and Adult Congenital Heart Disease clinics.
- Provide a weekly Transoesophageal Echocardiography (TOE) list.
- Provide cardiac imaging expertise to the General Cardiology MDT and TAVI MDT.
- Contribute to the management of patients with Adult Congenital Heart Disease, under the supervision of a specialist nurse.
- Participate in weekly multidisciplinary meetings and other departmental activities.
- Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision of middle-grade and rotating doctors.
- Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement and research.
- Develop specialist interests in line with experience and service requirements.
The department provides a comprehensive range of general and specialist Cardiology services, including:
- General Cardiology
- Chest Pain Clinics
- Complex Heart Failure and Devices
- Arrhythmias
- Valve Disease
- Cardiomyopathies
- Adult Congenital Heart Disease
- Familial Arrhythmia services
- Elective and acute coronary intervention
- 24-hour primary PCI
- TAVI
- Bradycardia and complex pacing
- Leadless pacemaker implantation
- Electrophysiology
- Advanced cardiac imaging.
The Echocardiography service performs approximately 12,000 transthoracic echocardiograms annually and provides a comprehensive advanced imaging service including:
- Transoesophageal Echocardiography (TOE)
- Contrast and bubble echocardiography
- 3D echocardiography
- Stress echocardiography, including DSE and bike stress
- Coronary CT
- Cardiac MRI
- PET
- Myocardial perfusion scintigraphy
- MUGA
- DPD scanning for cardiac amyloidosis.
The service also holds regular Echocardiography review meetings to discuss complex and interesting cases.
- MBChB or equivalent medical qualification.
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent.
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
- GMC Specialist Registration in Cardiology, or eligibility for CCT within 6 months of interview.
- Extensive experience in Adult Cardiology.
- Expertise in cardiac imaging, specifically TOE.
- Experience in Adult Congenital Heart Disease, or willingness to develop expertise in this area.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to prioritise workload and work effectively under pressure.
- Commitment to teaching and supervision.
- Experience in clinical audit and record keeping.
- BSE or ESC accreditation.
- Experience in or willingness to develop skills in stress echocardiography or nuclear medicine.
- Higher degree.
- Research experience.
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Experience in multidisciplinary management and project planning.
- Independent TOE operator status.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to existing undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes, including supervision of trainees and rotating doctors.
There are also opportunities to develop research interests through both local and multicentre collaborative research, with support from the organisation's Research and Development Directorate and links with academic colleagues.
