We are currently looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Sous Chef to join our friendly kitchen team at our Darley Abbey restaurant. This is a fantastic opportunity for a passionate chef who enjoys working with quality ingredients, leading a team, and thrives in a busy, fast-paced restaurant environment.
About the Role
As Sous Chef, you will play a key role in the day-to-day running of the kitchen, working closely with the Head Chef and wider management team to maintain the high standards Lorentes is known for.
You will support the Head Chef in delivering consistently high-quality Spanish dishes, lead the kitchen team during service, and help create a positive, professional, and well-organised working environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Head Chef with the day-to-day running of the kitchen.
- Lead and motivate the kitchen team during busy services.
- Prepare and cook dishes to a consistently high standard, following Lorentes' recipes and presentation standards.
- Ensure all food is prepared, cooked, and presented to the highest possible standard.
- Assist with menu development, specials, and seasonal dishes.
- Maintain excellent food quality, consistency, and portion control.
- Ensure effective communication between the kitchen and front of house teams.
- Assist with ordering, stock control, deliveries, and monitoring food costs.
- Minimise food waste and maintain efficient kitchen practices.
- Train, coach, and support junior chefs and kitchen team members.
- Ensure all food hygiene, health & safety, and HACCP procedures are followed at all times.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, organisation, and kitchen presentation.
- Support with kitchen opening and closing procedures.
- Step up and take responsibility for the kitchen in the Head Chef's absence.
- Lead by example and contribute to a positive and professional kitchen culture.
What We're Looking For
- Previous experience as a Sous Chef, Senior Chef de Partie, or in a similar senior kitchen role.
- A genuine passion for cooking, quality ingredients, and hospitality.
- Experience working in a busy, fast-paced restaurant environment.
- Strong knowledge of food safety, hygiene, and kitchen health & safety.
- Excellent organisational and communication skills.
- The ability to lead, motivate, and develop a kitchen team.
- A calm, hands-on approach and the ability to perform under pressure.
- Strong attention to detail and pride in presentation and consistency.
- A proactive attitude with a willingness to get involved in all areas of the kitchen.
- Experience with Spanish or Mediterranean cuisine would be an advantage, but is not essential.
- Must be available to work evenings, weekends, seasonal holidays, and bank holidays.
