About the role and the Team:
As Head of Access Planning, you will be responsible for optimising cost across the Access & Aggregation network by identifying and delivering opportunities to reconfigure existing deployments and reduce spend in the near to medium term. You'll work closely with stakeholders to ensure guidance for new network deployments are commercially sensible and support long-term network cost efficiency.
You will forecast and initiate the network upgrades needed to support the company's growth plans, making sure capacity is delivered in a timely, efficient and scalable way. You'll also manage key relationships with Data Centre partners and BT Openreach, ensuring we have the right provision of space, power and interconnects to support both current operations and future growth.
This is an excellent opportunity for a technically minded individual to make a clear, measurable impact on key business outcomes, including EBITDA and long-term cost-to-serve (LTP).
What will you be doing?
- Identifying the key cost drivers across the Access & Aggregation network and how decisions in one area can affect efficiency or cost elsewhere.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities that are realistic and can be delivered in practice.
- Develop business cases which optimize overall spend.
- Ensure documentation of standards, good practice guides, and/or training materials are created and maintained.
- Negotiate with external suppliers to achieve value-driven outcomes.
- Produce regular capacity reports and keep visibility of network demand.
- Proactively flag where action is needed to maintain capacity to meet business needs.
- Work with stakeholders to drive overall network spend efficiency.
- Manage and develop your team, ensuring the right mix of skills across the group.
- Manage functional expertise across PON, Network Facilities, & Physical Design teams;
PON Architecture
- Define, document, and maintain clear standards and guidance for the deployment and use of PON fibre across Hyperoptic.
- Ensure standards are effectively communicated and embedded across teams.
- Leverage PON team expertise to maximise utilisation of Hyperoptic-owned assets, replacing third-party infrastructure where commercially viable to reduce overall network costs.
Planning & Network Facilities Management
- Manage strategic relationships with Data Centre providers and BT Openreach (in relation to space, power and cross connects).
- Maintain sufficient capacity to support growth while controlling costs.
- Monitor and report on capacity utilisation identifying and initiating action to avoid capacity bottlenecks.
Physical Design
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive documentation of all equipment deployments across exchanges and data centres.
- Ensure all deployments adhere to defined standards for power, cooling, resilience, and operational efficiency.
- Strive to define standards that drive “best practice”.
What we are looking for:
- Degree/HND or equivalent qualification in a relevant Telecommunications discipline, and/or equivalent experience.
- Experience of working in telecommunications industry
- Practical experience planning and delivering the deployment of optical networks or active telecoms equipment.
- Experience working with Openreach (knowledge of LLU preferred) and major Data Centre providers is advantageous.
- Experience in creating, managing, and tracking budgets, with strong financial awareness and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills across all levels, both written and verbal.
- Commercially astute, with the ability to assess total cost of ownership (TCO), compare solution benefits, and interpret key terms within contracts and agreements.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with a logical, structured approach to resolving issues.
- Comfortable presenting to executive-level stakeholders with clarity, confidence, and impact.
