Working Pattern: Full-time, 40 hours per week, with flexibility to work across OCL Vision's London and Elstree clinics according to clinical and operational requirements.

Job Brief
The Ophthalmic Diagnostics & Admissions Nurse is a combined clinical role supporting patients throughout their diagnostic, pre-operative and surgical journey at OCL Vision.
The role combines hands-on ophthalmic diagnostic testing with nursing responsibilities for the admission and preparation of patients undergoing ophthalmic surgery.
The successful candidate must be a Registered Nurse with current NMC registration and have previous practical experience working within ophthalmology and undertaking ophthalmic diagnostics.
You will work closely with consultant ophthalmologists, optometrists, nurses, technicians and the wider clinical team to ensure patients receive safe, efficient and highly personalised care.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Ophthalmic Diagnostics
- Undertake accurate ophthalmic diagnostic testing as requested by consultants and optometrists.
- Perform visual acuity assessments and accurately document results.
- Undertake OCT scanning and ophthalmic imaging.
- Undertake biometry and IOLMaster measurements.
- Perform Humphrey Visual Field testing.
- Undertake retinal photography and imaging.
- Perform auto-refraction.
- Undertake Pentacam and corneal topography/tomography investigations.
- Perform Endothelial Cell Count (ECC) measurements where required.
- Undertake focimetry and other ophthalmic measurements.
- Perform intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements within competency.
- Ensure all diagnostic results and images are accurately recorded and available for clinical review.
- Recognise potentially abnormal results or findings requiring escalation and promptly refer these to the appropriate clinician.
- Maintain a high standard of accuracy and quality across all diagnostic investigations.
- Ensure diagnostic equipment is cleaned, maintained and ready for clinical use.
- Report equipment faults promptly through the appropriate internal processes.
Admissions Nursing
- Admit patients undergoing ophthalmic surgical procedures.
- Complete and document pre-operative nursing assessments and admission checks.
- Confirm patient identity, planned procedure, laterality and relevant clinical documentation.
- Complete surgical safety and pre-operative checklists in accordance with OCL Vision protocols.
- Record baseline observations and undertake appropriate clinical assessments.
- Review and confirm medical history, allergies, medications and other relevant information as part of the admission process.
- Ensure all required investigations, consent and documentation are available prior to surgery.
- Prepare patients appropriately for their planned ophthalmic procedure.
- Administer prescribed ophthalmic medications and eye drops where appropriately trained, competent and authorised.
- Identify and escalate any clinical concerns or changes in a patient's condition.
- Liaise with consultants and the surgical team to support safe and efficient patient flow.
- Provide reassurance and clear communication to patients throughout their surgical journey.
- Support appropriate pre-operative and post-operative care within professional scope and competency.
Patient Care
- Provide an exceptional standard of care throughout the patient's journey.
- Communicate clearly and sensitively with patients who may be anxious about diagnostic investigations or surgery.
- Explain diagnostic procedures and pre-operative processes in a clear and reassuring manner.
- Respond appropriately to patient questions and escalate clinical queries to the appropriate clinician.
- Maintain patient dignity, privacy and confidentiality at all times.
- Recognise individual patient needs and provide a personalised and empathetic approach to care.
- Provide appropriate health promotion and post-operative information within professional scope.
Clinical and Operational Responsibilities
- Support the efficient flow of patients through diagnostic clinics and surgical admission areas.
- Prepare diagnostic, consulting and treatment rooms for clinical activity.
- Ensure clinical areas are clean, tidy, appropriately stocked and ready for use.
- Complete opening and closing checks for clinical and diagnostic areas as required.
- Ensure equipment is operational prior to clinics and surgical lists.
- Clean and prepare equipment in accordance with infection prevention procedures, CQC requirements and OCL Vision protocols.
- Maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient records.
- Use OCL Vision's electronic patient record and clinical systems appropriately.
- Complete required clinical and operational checklists and escalate any non-compliance.
- Support administrative activities associated with patient admissions, diagnostics and imaging where required.
Clinical Governance and Safety
- Work within NMC professional standards and individual scope of practice.
- Maintain accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date clinical documentation.
- Follow infection prevention and control procedures.
- Comply with Health and Safety requirements.
- Report incidents, near misses and clinical concerns in accordance with OCL Vision procedures.
- Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement activities where required.
- Ensure identified clinical risks are appropriately escalated.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with information governance requirements.
- Contribute to maintaining high standards of clinical governance across the service.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.
- Previous ophthalmology experience is essential.
- Previous hands-on ophthalmic diagnostic experience is essential.
- Experience undertaking OCT scanning.
- Experience undertaking biometry/IOL measurements.
- Experience undertaking Humphrey Visual Field testing.
- Experience with retinal photography/imaging.
- Experience undertaking visual acuity and routine ophthalmic measurements.
- Experience supporting patients within an ophthalmic clinical environment.
- Understanding of pre-operative assessment and surgical admissions.
- Ability to recognise and appropriately escalate clinical concerns.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Working at OCL Vision
This is a permanent, full-time position working 40 hours per week, with a salary from £36,000 per annum, dependent on experience.
The position will work across our London and Elstree clinics, supporting both ophthalmic diagnostic clinics and surgical admissions according to clinical requirements.
Training will be provided on OCL Vision's specific equipment, systems and clinical protocols. However, previous hands-on ophthalmic diagnostic experience is essential for this position.
