Role Overview
Job Title: Deputy Manager
Reports to: Registered Manager, or Business Manager in their absence
Hours: Varied weekly hours, set rota, including weekend, evening and night shifts
Contract type: Hourly paid
Location: Abbeywood Care Home, Tottington, Bury
This is a floor based role, sitting above Senior Carers in the staff structure. The Deputy Manager works directly within the home delivering hands on care alongside the staff team, and takes the lead for the safe and effective running of the home during their shift, including acting as the senior person on duty in the absence of the Registered Manager. The postholder is the Senior Management Team's eyes and ears on the floor, with the authority to manage standards, conduct and performance during the shift, and is a visible, active presence supporting residents and staff directly rather than working from an office.
Job Description
Care Delivery
- Work hands on as part of the staff team to deliver direct personal care to residents throughout the shift.
- Lead by example in all aspects of care delivery, including personal care, mobility, nutrition and hydration, and end of life care.
- Ensure all care delivered during the shift follows the principles of person centred care and reflects each resident's current care plan.
- Administer and oversee medication safely in line with the home's medication policy where required.
- Respond promptly and appropriately to changes in a resident's condition, escalating concerns and seeking medical attention where needed.
- Support residents and families with dignity, kindness and respect at all times.
Leading the Shift
- Take charge of the home during the shift in the absence of the Registered Manager, acting as the senior point of contact for staff, residents, families and visiting professionals.
- Hold delegated authority to manage staff conduct, performance and standards on the floor during the shift, addressing issues directly and escalating to the Registered Manager where formal action is needed.
- Allocate and oversee staff duties for the shift, ensuring safe staffing levels and appropriate skill mix at all times.
- Support and supervise care staff, agency staff and new starters on shift, providing guidance and on the job coaching.
- Manage day to day issues that arise during the shift, including staff absence, resident incidents and visitor concerns, escalating to the Registered Manager where appropriate.
- Carry out walkarounds and checks during the shift to monitor the wellbeing of residents and the safety of the environment.
- Hold and safely manage keys, including those for medication and other secure areas, as required by the shift.
Person Centred Care & Safeguarding
- Follow the principles of the person centred approach in all interactions with residents.
- Ensure safeguarding of residents is paramount, recognising and reporting any concerns immediately in line with Abbeywood's safeguarding policy.
- Support the appropriate assessment of a resident's capacity under the Mental Capacity Act, recording all those involved in any best interest decision.
- Ensure care provided to a resident with a DoLS authorisation meets the requirements set out in that authorisation.
- Identify and act on opportunities to maximise residents' independence, choice and quality of life.
Quality & Audits
- Complete scheduled audits accurately and on time, including medication, care plans, health and safety, infection control and falls.
- Identify shortfalls found during audits and take prompt action to put them right, or escalate where they are beyond your authority to resolve.
- Feed back audit findings and actions to the Registered Manager and Senior Management Team.
- Check that actions from previous audits have been completed and embedded into daily practice.
- Use audit findings to identify trends and recurring issues, and raise these with the Registered Manager.
Role Modelling, Supervision & Appraisal
- Act as a visible role model for Senior Carers and Carers, demonstrating the standard of care and conduct expected at Abbeywood.
- Lead by example on shift, showing staff how tasks and standards should be carried out rather than simply directing from a distance.
- Carry out supervisions and appraisals for Senior Carers and Carers in line with Abbeywood's schedule.
- Identify training and development needs arising from supervision, appraisal and day to day observation, and feed these back to the Registered Manager.
- Support new starters through induction and probation, providing on the job coaching and honest, constructive feedback.
- Address performance or conduct concerns with Senior Carers and Carers promptly and fairly, escalating formal capability or disciplinary matters to the Registered Manager.
- Maintain accurate, timely and legible records of care given, incidents, and any concerns arising during the shift.
- Know when, to whom and how to report notifiable occurrences in the absence of the Registered Manager.
- Follow all Abbeywood policies and procedures, and relevant CQC and regulatory requirements, escalating any compliance concerns.
- Support infection prevention and control standards and health and safety requirements throughout the shift.
- Communicate effectively with the next shift and the Registered Manager through handover and written records.
Professional Conduct
- Maintain a high standard of professional conduct at all times.
- Act as a positive role model for staff, demonstrating the values and standards expected at Abbeywood.
- Build and maintain excellent working relationships with residents, families, colleagues and visiting professionals.
- Take an active part in your own supervision, appraisal and ongoing training and development.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties requested by the Registered Manager or senior management team, appropriate to the role.

Qualifications
NVQ/QCF/Diploma Level 3 in Health and Social Care
Care Certificate completed.
Experience
Experience working in a care home or similar care setting
Experience supporting or leading a shift or acting as a senior carer
Experience working with residents living with dementia
Previous experience administering medication
Experience completing audits
Supervising and managing other staff members
Knowledge
Understanding of person-centred care
In depth understanding of safeguarding adults
Awareness of CQC's role and the standards expected of a care home
Understanding of the Mental Capacity Act and DoLS
Knowledge of infection prevention and control practice
Skills
Able to remain calm and use good judgement under pressure
Strong communication skills with residents, families and colleagues
Able to support, direct and manage other staff during a shift, including giving honest feedback
Competent with basic written records and completing audits accurately Confident using care planning or call bell systems
Comfortable using email and basic IT systems
