Accountant – 4 Day Week
£32,000–£36,000 | 32 hours | Monday–Thursday | Every Friday Off | Paisley
Good accountants can produce the numbers. The best ones are curious about what those numbers mean, question what doesn't look right and want to find smarter ways to get the work done.
We're looking for an Accountant to join our team in Paisley.
You don't need to arrive knowing everything. We're looking for someone with good practical accounting experience, a strong work ethic and, importantly, someone who wants to learn and develop.
You'll work directly with established businesses, typically turning over between £1m and £10m, and become involved in their accounting throughout the year rather than simply completing compliance work at year end.
Technology is a big part of how we work. We use QuickBooks Online, cloud applications, automation and increasingly AI to reduce repetitive work and improve the quality and speed of the financial information we provide to clients.
You'll still do the accounting work – processing, reconciliations, VAT returns and annual accounts – but you'll also learn how to improve the systems and processes behind it.
What's in it for you?
- £32,000–£36,000 salary for a 32-hour, four-day working week
- Equivalent to approximately £37,500–£42,200 based on a 37.5-hour week
- Every Friday off – a genuine three-day weekend every week
- Your own portfolio of clients and direct contact with business owners
- Exposure to cloud accounting, automation, AI and developing finance technology
- The opportunity to learn, develop and take on greater responsibility as your experience grows
- Direct access to and support from the Director
- A modern, high-spec Paisley office with private parking, approximately five minutes from the train station
What you'll be doing
- Work on the day-to-day accounting for a portfolio of clients, including processing, reconciliations, VAT returns and annual accounts
- Make sure clients' accounting records are accurate, up to date and fully reconciled
- Help prepare the financial information required for management accounts and reporting
- Manage your own workload and client deadlines
- Communicate directly with clients by phone, email and in meetings
- Work with QuickBooks Online and connected cloud applications
- Help improve clients' accounting systems and processes
- Identify repetitive manual tasks that could be streamlined through automation or technology
- Investigate discrepancies and question things that don't look right
- Learn how AI and emerging technology can be used practically within accounting and finance
- Contribute ideas about how we can continually improve the way we work
What we're looking for
We're not looking for the finished article.
We want someone who already has a good grounding in accounting but is keen to develop their skills and learn a different way of working.
Ideally, you'll have:
- Practical accounting experience, ideally gained within an accountancy practice
- A good understanding of accounts preparation, reconciliations and VAT
- AAT, part-qualified ACA/ACCA, or equivalent practical experience
- Experience dealing directly with clients
- Good attention to detail and the confidence to investigate when something doesn't look right
- Experience with cloud accounting software – ideally QuickBooks Online – or a willingness to learn
- An interest in technology and how it can improve accounting
- A willingness to learn and take on more responsibility as you develop
The quality of your work, your attitude and your willingness to learn matter more to us than the letters after your name.
About Total Accounting
Total Accounting has been helping businesses manage and improve their finances since 2004.
We're not trying to become a traditional accountancy practice – we've never operated that way.
We work closely with our clients and increasingly become part of their finance function. Alongside accounts, VAT and compliance, we help businesses improve their accounting systems, automate processes and get better financial information.
We're continuing to invest heavily in cloud technology, automation, AI and real-time financial reporting.
If you're an accountant who enjoys getting the work done properly, wants to keep learning and is interested in where technology is taking the profession, we'd like to hear from you.
