The Role
A Paralegal in a Childcare department supports solicitors with legal work relating to children and families, often involving sensitive matters such as care proceedings, safeguarding, and family law cases. The role involves assisting with the preparation and management of case files, drafting legal documents and court bundles, carrying out legal research, and liaising with clients, courts, and external professionals.
Paralegals play a key role in ensuring cases progress efficiently, maintaining accurate records, and supporting solicitors in delivering a high standard of client care in often complex and emotionally sensitive situations.
Responsibilities
- Support solicitors on childcare cases, assisting with progression from instruction to completion
- Draft legal documents, correspondence, and prepare court bundles
- Conduct legal research to support case preparation and strategy
- Maintain accurate case files and ensure deadlines and court requirements are met
- Liaise with clients, courts, counsel, and external agencies
- Assist with hearing preparation, including briefing counsel
- Monitor key dates and manage case progression effectively
- Record time and support billing in line with firm procedures
Requirements
- Previous experience as a Paralegal or similar legal role
- Proven experience drafting legal documents and supporting casework
- Strong understanding of legal terminology and court procedures (childcare experience desirable)
- Proficient in case management systems and Microsoft Office
- Highly organised with the ability to manage competing deadlines
- Confident communicator with strong attention to detail
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
- Professional, discreet, and able to handle sensitive information
