A sales job somewhere a little different
If you’re great with people, have a natural eye for interiors and would rather work for a friendly independent business than a big retail chain, we’d love to hear from you.
Old Boot is an independent British furniture company based in the heart of Matlock. We sell beautifully made sofas, armchairs and footstools from our showroom and online to customers throughout the UK.
We care enormously about our furniture, but just as importantly, we care about the experience our customers have when they buy from us.
We’re now looking for an experienced Senior Sales Consultant to become an important part of our small, friendly team.
This isn’t a high-pressure sales environment. We don’t believe in scripts, hard selling or following customers around a showroom.
Instead, we take time to understand what someone is looking for, offer knowledgeable and honest advice and help them find a sofa they’ll love living with for years.
What’s it like working at Old Boot?
We’re small enough that everyone matters
You won’t disappear into a large retail team or be managed by endless targets and processes. You’ll have responsibility, independence and the freedom to use your judgement to look after customers properly.
We’re an ambitious and growing independent business, but we also want Old Boot to be a genuinely enjoyable place to work.
You’ll work alongside a friendly, creative team who care about what they do and are always happy to help each other. Your ideas will be listened to and the contribution you make will genuinely be noticed.
And, of course, you’ll spend your working day surrounded by rather lovely sofas.
The role
Our customers are making an important purchase for their home and often need help navigating different designs, sizes, configurations, fabrics, leathers and finishes.
Your job is to make that process easy and enjoyable.
You’ll welcome customers into our Matlock showroom, get to know what they’re looking for and confidently guide them towards the right furniture for their home.
Not every sale happens on the first visit, so an important part of the role is also building relationships, following up enquiries and staying in touch with customers while they make their decision.
You’ll also help customers who contact us by telephone, email, social media or video appointment.
What you’ll be doing
- Welcoming and advising customers in our Matlock showroom
- Getting to know customers and understanding what they need from their furniture
- Helping customers choose between different sofa designs, sizes and configurations
- Advising on fabrics, leathers, colours and finishes
- Building relationships and confidently turning enquiries into sales
- Following up customers by telephone and email
- Conducting showroom and video appointments
- Responding to online, telephone, email and social media enquiries
- Accurately preparing and processing customer orders
- Helping customers with questions throughout their order and delivery
- Keeping the showroom beautiful, clean and welcoming
- Working with the wider team to solve problems and deliver brilliant customer service
- Contributing ideas about how we can make the Old Boot experience even better
Who we’re looking for
We’re looking for someone who already knows how to communicate confidently with customers and understands what genuinely excellent service feels like.
You might currently work in furniture, interiors or premium retail, but you could equally come from hospitality, property, automotive sales or another customer-focused environment.
Previous furniture experience isn’t essential. We’ll give you full training in our furniture, construction, fabrics, leathers and materials.
What matters is that you’re:
- Warm, personable and naturally good with people
- An excellent communicator, both face-to-face and in writing
- Confident and commercially minded without being pushy
- Comfortable turning enquiries into sales
- Naturally curious and good at understanding what customers really need
- Organised and good at following things through
- Honest, reliable and trustworthy
- Comfortable working independently and using your initiative
- Happy taking responsibility rather than waiting to be told what to do
- Computer literate and comfortable learning new systems
- A genuine team player
- Interested in interiors, design and beautiful products
For this senior position, previous sales or substantial customer-facing experience is expected.
This is a full or part time role
Finding the right person is more important to us than finding someone who fits one particular working pattern. We’re therefore happy to consider either full-time or part-time applicants.
Full time salary – £27,500 per year
Part time – from 28.5 hours per week, paid pro rata based on a £27,500 full-time salary
The role includes weekends, with the remaining working days on a set weekday pattern.
There may also occasionally be opportunities for additional hours to cover holidays or absence.
What we offer
- £27,500 full-time salary / pro rata for part time
- Team bonus scheme following successful completion of probation
- Company pension
- Generous employee discount
- Full product and sales training
- A friendly and supportive working environment
- Plenty of responsibility and independence
- The opportunity to have your ideas heard
- The chance to grow with an ambitious independent British business

We’re much more interested in finding the right person than receiving a perfectly polished CV.
