About UK Turnstiles
UK Turnstiles is a specialist supplier and installer of pedestrian and vehicle entrance-control systems. We work with customers throughout the UK, providing turnstiles, speed gates, automatic pedestrian gates, access-control systems and vehicle barriers.
Due to continued growth, we are looking for an experienced Access Control Engineer to join our engineering team.
The successful candidate must be confident installing, commissioning, servicing and fault-finding access-control systems. Previous experience with turnstiles, speed gates, automatic gates or barriers would be highly beneficial, but it is not essential.
An engineer with a strong access-control background should be able to quickly learn the turnstile element of the role, and product-specific training will be provided.
The Role
This is a nationwide, field-based engineering position involving the installation, commissioning, maintenance and repair of access-control and entrance-control equipment.
Typical duties will include:
- Installing and commissioning access-control systems.
- Installing turnstiles, speed gates, automatic pedestrian gates and vehicle barriers.
- Wiring access-control panels, readers, controllers and field devices.
- Connecting override controls, fire-alarm interfaces, exit devices and safety equipment.
- Integrating access-control systems with turnstiles, gates and barriers.
- Reading and working from wiring diagrams and installation drawings.
- Diagnosing electrical, mechanical and system-related faults.
- Carrying out planned preventative maintenance and reactive service visits.
- Testing completed installations and ensuring equipment is operating correctly.
- Providing basic customer training and equipment handover.
- Completing job sheets, service reports and other project documentation.
- Working closely with customers, project managers and other contractors on site.
- Attending our Horsham premises for equipment collection, training, pre-build work and project preparation when required.
Nationwide Travel and Overnight Stays
Regular travel throughout the UK and overnight stays are an essential part of this role.
Applicants must be willing and able to:
- Travel to customer sites anywhere within the UK.
- Undertake regular overnight stays.
- Stay away for several consecutive nights where required by the project.
- Work early starts, extended days and occasional weekends when necessary.
- Work additional hours when required, with overtime paid at the applicable rate.
Accommodation and approved business expenses associated with working away from home will be covered by the company.
Applicants who are not comfortable with regular nationwide travel and overnight stays should not apply.
Essential Experience and Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Proven experience installing, commissioning, servicing and fault-finding access-control systems.
- Confidence working independently on customer sites.
- Experience with access-control readers, controllers, locking devices and associated field equipment.
- A good understanding of relays, inputs, outputs and volt-free contacts.
- Experience wiring control panels and following electrical schematics.
- Good electrical and practical fault-finding skills.
- The ability to diagnose faults methodically and identify whether issues are electrical, mechanical or system-related.
- Good communication and customer-service skills.
- A professional, reliable and safety-conscious approach.
- The ability to work independently and as part of an engineering team.
- A full UK driving licence with fewer than six current penalty points.
- The ability to meet the requirements of the company’s vehicle insurer.
- A willingness to travel nationwide and undertake regular overnight stays.
Any current driving endorsements must be declared during the recruitment process.
Desirable Experience
Experience in any of the following areas would be advantageous:
- Turnstiles and full-height turnstiles.
- Speed gates and optical entrance-control systems.
- Automatic pedestrian gates.
- Vehicle barriers and gate automation.
- Paxton Net2.
- Suprema or BioStar access control.
- Nortech access-control systems.
- CDVI, HID or similar access-control products.
- Intercom and door-entry systems.
- ANPR systems.
- Networked access-control systems.
- Maglocks, electric strikes and monitored locking devices.
- Door contacts, emergency releases and fire-alarm interfaces.
- Induction loops, photocells and safety beams.
- Basic mechanical installation, alignment and adjustment.
- CSCS, ECS, IPAF or other relevant industry qualifications.
Previous turnstile experience is desirable but not essential. Full product training will be provided to applicants with the right access-control experience and technical ability.
