Lead the Programme. Deliver the Change.
Bader College and Herstmonceux Castle Estate are seeking an experienced Health & Safety professional to lead the delivery of a significant programme of Health & Safety improvements across our unique, diverse and multi-site educational and heritage estate.
This is a hands-on, project-focused role. Recent audits, inspections, fire risk assessments and specialist reviews have identified a clear programme of improvements. We're now looking for someone to take ownership of that programme, coordinate delivery and embed sustainable Health & Safety arrangements across the organisation.
This is an initial six-month project with the opportunity for the right candidate to transition into a permanent part-time Health & Safety role (24–30 hours per week), during or following the project, subject to organisational requirements and performance.
About the Role
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, you'll be the organisation's dedicated Health & Safety lead throughout the project, operating with a high degree of autonomy to deliver a clearly defined programme of improvements.
Working across a diverse, multi-site operation, including higher education facilities, student accommodation, heritage buildings, hospitality and events, visitor attractions, gardens, grounds and maintenance operations, you'll coordinate delivery across multiple departments, ensuring agreed improvements are implemented, monitored and embedded into day-to-day operations.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and deliver a structured Health & Safety Improvement Plan.
Prioritise and implement recommendations arising from audits, inspections, fire risk assessments and specialist reviews.
Lead Health & Safety improvement initiatives across operational departments.
Review, develop and embed Health & Safety policies, procedures and management arrangements.
Strengthen arrangements relating to fire safety, first aid, incident management, asbestos management, water hygiene and other statutory compliance requirements.
- Develop systems for risk management, compliance monitoring, action tracking and performance reporting.
- Provide regular progress updates and assurance to the Chief Operating Officer and senior leadership team.
- Support managers to embed good Health & Safety practice and promote a positive Health & Safety culture across the organisation.
About You
We're looking for someone with a proven track record of delivering Health & Safety improvement programmes and implementing meaningful organisational change.
You'll bring:
- Experience implementing recommendations arising from Health & Safety audits, inspections, compliance reviews or fire risk assessments.
- Experience managing Health & Safety action plans, compliance projects or improvement programmes.
- Strong working knowledge of Health & Safety legislation, Approved Codes of Practice and recognised best practice.
- Experience developing and embedding Health & Safety policies, procedures and management systems.
- The ability to influence, engage and build effective working relationships across a diverse organisation.
- Excellent organisational, communication and project management skills.
- The ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and deliver agreed outcomes.
- Experience within higher education, hospitality, heritage, visitor attractions or similarly complex, multi-site environments would be advantageous.
Essential Qualifications
- NEBOSH General Certificate (or an equivalent recognised Health & Safety qualification).
Desirable
- TechIOSH, CertIOSH or GradIOSH membership.
