About the role
Balfour Beatty is seeking an experienced Sub Agent to join our team on a major pumping station project in Benacre. This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in delivering critical infrastructure works, leading a dedicated site team and ensuring the safe, efficient, and high-quality execution of a key section of the project.
As Sub Agent, you will take responsibility for managing and controlling a defined section of the works within your discipline, ensuring delivery in line with programme, budget, quality, and safety requirements. You will lead and support a team of Section Engineers and Site Engineers, providing direction, technical guidance, and effective coordination to drive performance and achieve project objectives.

What you'll be doing
- Leading and controlling a section of the pumping station works, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery.
- Managing and developing a team of Section Engineers and Site Engineers, providing technical guidance and mentoring.
- Reviewing and improving Method Statements and Risk Assessments to ensure robust planning and safe execution of works.
- Taking ownership of Permits to Work, including Confined Space and Hot Works permits, ensuring full compliance with site procedures.
- Promoting a strong safety culture by undertaking site audits, investigating incidents, and identifying improvements from audits, near misses, and lessons learned.
- Coordinating and implementing temporary works requirements, ensuring designs and programmes are delivered to meet construction timescales.
- Resolving technical and construction challenges, liaising with designers and stakeholders to deliver practical engineering solutions.
- Overseeing quality assurance processes, including inspections, materials approvals, NCR management, and compliance with specifications.
- Managing the production, review, and submission of handover documentation, ensuring works are completed to the required standards.
- Driving continuous improvement by analysing performance trends, identifying opportunities to reduce non-conformances, and enhancing project delivery.
- Conducting site inspections and audits to ensure works and documentation meet contractual, regulatory, and company requirements.
- Supporting the development of less experienced engineers through coaching, training, and sharing industry best practice.
Who we're looking for
- Proven experience delivering civil engineering or infrastructure projects in a site management role, with the ability to lead teams and manage work packages safely and efficiently.
- Strong understanding of health, safety and environmental requirements, including method statements, risk assessments, permit-to-work systems, and current H&S legislation.
- Experience developing safe systems of work and contributing to accident and incident investigations, with a proactive approach to continuous improvement.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills, with a track record of coaching engineers, managing teams, and driving high performance on site.
- Strong technical knowledge of construction processes, setting out techniques, and quality assurance requirements, with the ability to resolve technical challenges effectively.
- Experience producing and managing construction programmes, allocating resources, monitoring KPIs, and delivering works to programme and budget.
- Good understanding of handover requirements, certification processes, and business management systems, with experience maintaining accurate project records and documentation.
- A solution-oriented mindset, able to work independently, take ownership of responsibilities, and identify opportunities to improve project outcomes.
- Knowledge of commercial and procurement processes, including maintaining records to support contractual and commercial requirements.
- Holds a valid CSCS Card and driving licence, with SSSTS or SMSTS qualification. Professional accreditation (e.g. ICE or IHT) is desirable.
