The Role
We are looking for a Structural Engineer who is technically capable, practical and genuinely
passionate about sustainable construction. A real interest in natural and low-carbon materials —
particularly timber — is central to this role.
We want someone who understands how their designs are built and is comfortable on site, not just
behind a screen. The role suits someone who enjoys solving real building problems, working with
existing structures and collaborating directly with architects, contractors and fabricators across
residential and small commercial projects.
Key Responsibilities
– Structural design for residential, retrofit, extensions, basements and small commercial projects.
– Preparing calculations, sketches, markups and structural design packages.
– Designing steel, timber, masonry, concrete and foundation elements.
– Developing structural strategies in collaboration with architects and contractors.
– Reviewing existing buildings and proposing practical alteration strategies.
– Carrying out site inspections and preparing site notes.
– Liaising with contractors, fabricators and temporary works designers.
– Supporting building control submissions and technical coordination.
Skills and Experience
– A degree in civil or structural engineering.
– Experience in UK structural design, particularly at domestic or small commercial scale.
– Knowledge of timber design, or a strong interest in developing this.
– Understanding of steel, masonry, concrete and foundation design.
– A genuine interest in natural, low-carbon and regenerative materials.
– Confidence working with architects and contractors in a collaborative, hands-on way.
– Site experience, or a strong willingness to be site-facing.
Software
Experience in some of the following is helpful — we value practical judgement and clear
communication as much as specific tools:
– Tekla Structural Designer or Robot Structural Analysis.
– Tedds or MasterSeries for calculations.
– Revit or AutoCAD for drawing production and BIM coordination.
– Structural timber design software.
– Excel-based calculation tools and clear hand sketching.
Personal Qualities
Practical and technically curious, comfortable with contractors and fabricators, calm under pressure
and clear in communication. You should be passionate about sustainable design and better material
choices, and at ease in a small practice where everyone contributes.
What Success Looks Like
– Structural packages are clear, buildable and well coordinated.
– Site queries are handled calmly and practically.
– Architects feel supported early in the design process.
– The studio strengthens its reputation for thoughtful, sustainable engineering.
Because Studio DASH is a small multidisciplinary studio, all team members should be comfortable
with:
– Working across different project stages and contributing where needed.
– Taking initiative and communicating clearly with colleagues, clients and contractors.
– Keeping files, drawings, notes and deadlines well organised.
– Joining site visits and engaging with construction teams.
– Working remotely as well as attending office or team sessions.
– Supporting a culture of learning, technical curiosity and design quality.
– Contributing to a practice that values sustainability, buildability and human relationships.
Pay: £40,000.00-£70,000.00 per year
