We are seeking a skilled and motivated Freelance Barge Pilot to join our team for operations along the Bridgewater Canal in Manchester. Duties
- Safely operate and pilot barges along designated sections of the Bridgewater Canal, adhering strictly to all safety regulations and navigational protocols
- Assist with mooring, unmooring, and maneuvering barges in confined or challenging waterway conditions
- Conduct pre-departure inspections of vessels to ensure operational readiness and compliance with safety standards
- Monitor weather conditions, water levels, and other environmental factors that could impact navigation or safety
- Communicate effectively with team members, harbor authorities, and other stakeholders regarding vessel movements and operational updates
- Maintain accurate logs of voyage details, navigational data, and incident reports as required
- Support emergency response procedures if unforeseen incidents or hazards occur during operations
Qualifications
- Proven experience as a barge pilot or maritime navigator with relevant certifications for inland waterways operations
- Strong knowledge of canal navigation rules, safety procedures, and environmental considerations specific to inland waterways in Manchester
- Valid maritime pilot license or equivalent certification recognized by local authorities
- Excellent communication skills for clear coordination with team members and external agencies
- Ability to work independently with a high level of responsibility and attention to detail
- Physical fitness to handle vessel inspections and operational tasks in various weather conditions
- Nice-to-have skills include familiarity with canal infrastructure, vessel maintenance basics, and emergency response training
