Job Overview
We are seeking a friendly and efficient Deli Shop Assistant to join Darrowby Provisions - a 1940s-themed deli. We have opportunities for staff working on anything between zero hours a week, through to full time - please specify in your application what you are looking for. Our opening hours are 0930 to 1700, 7 days a week. This position has a start date of 16 Sep 2026.
This role involves providing excellent customer service, preparing a variety of food items, and maintaining high standards of food safety and cleanliness. The ideal candidate will have a passion for food, good organisational skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. This position offers an opportunity to develop culinary skills and gain valuable experience in the retail food industry.
Responsibilities
- Assist customers by taking orders, serving food, and providing friendly assistance
- Prepare deli items such as sandwiches and cold cuts according to company standards
- Ensure all food preparation adheres to food safety regulations and hygiene standards
- Maintain cleanliness and organisation of the deli area, including equipment and work surfaces
- Restock shelves and display cases with fresh products throughout the shift
- Operate kitchen equipment safely and efficiently during food preparation
- Upsell products to maximise sales opportunities while delivering excellent customer service
- Manage cash register transactions accurately and efficiently
- Support team members during busy periods to ensure smooth operation of the shop
Experience
- Previous experience in a restaurant or retail food environment is desirable but not essential; training will be provided
- Basic knowledge of food safety practices and hygiene standards is advantageous
- Experience with food preparation, serving, or culinary tasks is preferred
- Familiarity with kitchen equipment and basic maths skills for handling transactions and measurements
- Strong time management skills to prioritise tasks effectively during busy periods
- Ability to work well within a team and communicate clearly with colleagues and customers
