Contract Electrician – Commercial Plant Room and BMS Wiring

The Role
Energex Technical Services Ltd is looking for an experienced commercial electrician to support several ongoing projects throughout the summer holidays and beyond.
The work will mainly involve electrical installation within school and commercial plant rooms. The successful applicant will work alongside our BMS and controls engineers, carrying out containment installation, control wiring, power wiring and second-fix electrical works.
The contract will continue until the current projects have been completed, with the possibility of further work for the right person.
Main Duties
The work will include:
- Installing electrical containment within commercial plant rooms
- Installing cable tray, basket, trunking and conduit
- Installing containment for heating, cooling and ventilation equipment
- Installing and terminating control and power cabling
- Second-fixing wiring in accordance with panel drawings
- Reading and working from electrical drawings, wiring diagrams and schematics
- Terminating cables within BMS control panels
- Connecting pumps, valves, actuators, sensors and other plant equipment
- Installing 24V and mains-voltage control circuits
- Labelling cables, containment and equipment
- Carrying out basic electrical testing
- Identifying and reporting drawing discrepancies or installation issues
- Working alongside BMS engineers during testing and commissioning
- Maintaining a clean, safe and professional working environment
Essential Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Previous commercial or industrial electrical experience
- Experience working within plant rooms
- Strong containment installation skills
- Experience reading electrical panel drawings and wiring diagrams
- Experience second-fixing control and power wiring
- Confidence working independently without constant supervision
- A good understanding of electrical safety and safe isolation
- Their own hand tools
- Reliable transport
- A valid ECS or CSCS card
- Relevant electrical qualifications
- Public liability insurance if working on a self-employed basis
- The right to work in the UK
- A professional, reliable and organised approach
DBS Background Check
Much of the work will be carried out within schools and other educational premises.
Applicants must therefore hold a valid DBS certificate or be willing to complete the necessary DBS background checks before starting work.
An Enhanced DBS check may be required depending on the site and nature of the work.
Any appointment will be subject to satisfactory background checks, references and confirmation of relevant qualifications.
Desirable Experience
The following would be advantageous:
- Previous BMS or controls wiring experience
- Experience wiring BMS control panels
- Experience with heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems
- Experience connecting pumps, motorised valves, actuators and sensors
- Knowledge of 24V control circuits
- Experience working in schools or occupied commercial buildings
- Testing and inspection qualifications
- IPAF or PASMA certification
- SSSTS or similar site-supervision training
Rate and Working Arrangement
The available day rate is:
- £300 per day for an experienced commercial electrician who can install containment and second-fix from clear drawings
- Up to £330 per day for an electrician with strong plant-room, BMS or controls wiring experience
A higher rate may be considered for someone with proven BMS controls experience who can fault-find, identify drawing issues and assist during commissioning.
The standard working day will be eight hours.
The electrician will be expected to provide their own hand tools, transport and appropriate personal protective equipment.
Materials will be supplied by Energex Technical Services Ltd unless otherwise agreed.
Parking, congestion charges and exceptional travel expenses will be agreed separately in advance.
Overtime Rates
Where additional hours are required and agreed in advance:
- Overtime after eight hours: normal hourly equivalent at time-and-a-half
- Saturdays: time-and-a-half
- Sundays and bank holidays: double time
All overtime must be authorised before being worked.
Payment Terms
Payment will be made weekly following:
- Submission of an accurate timesheet
- Approval of completed hours
- Submission of a valid invoice
- Completion of any required CIS verification
- Provision of relevant qualifications, insurance and DBS documentation
The successful applicant will be responsible for their own tax and National Insurance where engaged on a self-employed or CIS basis.
The final working arrangement will be subject to appropriate employment-status and CIS checks.
