About the role
As the senior member of the care team on duty, you will coordinate the shift and work alongside Care Assistants to ensure residents receive safe, attentive and person-centred care throughout the night.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading the night shift, allocating duties and ensuring resident areas remain appropriately covered.
- Supporting residents with personal care, mobility, comfort and reassurance while respecting their dignity, independence and individual preferences.
- Administering medicines safely using our electronic medicines system.
- Monitoring residents’ wellbeing and responding appropriately to changes or concerns.
- Managing incidents, emergencies and safeguarding concerns, including seeking advice and escalating concerns when necessary.
- Ensuring call bells and other safety alerts are answered promptly.
- Completing clear and accurate care records at the time care is provided.
- Providing a thorough handover to the incoming team.
- Supporting and guiding Care Assistants, including newer members of the team, and promoting consistently high standards.
Shifts are 18:45 to 07:00, usually including alternate weekends. The role involves seven night shifts per fortnight, averaging 42.875 hours per week.
About you
You must have previous experience as a Senior Care Assistant, Senior Carer, Care Leader or in a comparable role leading care shifts within a residential care home.
You will need:
- Experience of leading a care shift, allocating work and maintaining appropriate staff cover.
- Experience of administering medicines safely.
- The confidence to set clear expectations, give direction and challenge poor practice when necessary.
- The ability to ensure required checks, care records and other tasks are completed accurately and at the appropriate time.
- Sound judgement and the confidence to take charge during incidents or emergencies.
- A good understanding of safeguarding, including when and how concerns should be escalated.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to provide a clear and thorough handover.
- A calm, compassionate and person-centred approach to supporting residents.
- The resilience to lead consistently and maintain standards, including during busy or challenging shifts.
Experience supporting older people and people living with dementia is highly desirable.
A Level 3 qualification in Adult Care or Health and Social Care is preferred. We may consider an experienced Senior Carer who holds Level 2 or an equivalent qualification and is willing to work towards Level 3.
