The role of the cleaner
We are a place of hope, safety and hospitality to all people, and as such we want out building to be a clean, welcoming and safe space. As our cleaner, you will provide efficient and effective cleaning of St Helens Minster, ensuring the general appearance of the building is maintained to a safe and welcoming standard. The church comprises a foyer, kitchen, corridor with gents, ladies and disabled toilets off, large church nave with hospitality area at rear, small side chapel, choir & vicar’s vestries. Also, a separate but connected church hall comprising a large all-purpose upper hall with a landing, kitchen & ladies' toilets then a staircase down to the smaller lower hall & disabled toilet, a kitchen and the gents toilets. The church & hall are very well-used buildings and some flexibility will be required in relation to the timing of cleaning depending on the use of the rooms during the week.
The employee will work under the supervision of the Operations & Events Manager or other line manager in partnership with the Vicar, Church Wardens and Church Administrator, with their support and guidance.
Key responsibilities
- To undertake the following duties as directed by the Operations & Events Manager and in accordance with the work schedule provided but with flexibility depending on the use of rooms throughout the day.
- General tidy around church
- Vacuum carpeting in foyer, church, choir vestry and chapel
- Clean Kitchens in church & halls, including units and work surfaces
- Clean all the toilets and sinks in church, lower and upper halls
- Mop all hard floor surfaces in church kitchen & toilets, upper & lower halls and kitchens & all toilets in halls.
- Clean Vicar’s vestry including toilet and hand basin
- Brush between pews
- Dust pews, choir stalls, grand piano in church and chairs in the side chapel
- Polish brasses
- Clean internal glass panes in all doors in foyer
- General cleaning/dusting/damp washing/polishing as and where needed including windowsills, skirting boards and external surfaces of cupboards, shelves radiators and fitments
- Replenishing consumable items such as soap, toilet rolls, paper towels as required
- Emptying waste bins and transporting waste to the outside collection area
- Using chemical agents as directed by the Operations & Events Manager in the discharge of cleaning operation or maintenance procedures after receiving proper instruction and training including COSHH regulations
- Keep a check on cleaning stock levels and inform the Operations & Events Manager of low levels of stock
Personal Specification
- Trustworthy as this role is a keyholder
- Ability to handle cleaning equipment
- Ability to walk, bend, push, pull and lift repetitively during working hours
- Thorough and tidy approach
- Good communication and organisational skills
- Self-motivation and the ability to identify and complete needed tasks without direct supervision
Pay: From £13.45 per hour
