Job Overview
As an Apprentice Building Controls Engineer, you will join the electrical controls team while completing a Level 4 Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) Controls Engineer apprenticeship through distance learning. Working alongside experienced engineers, you will support the design, installation, commissioning, maintenance, and upgrading of building control systems for HVAC projects. Throughout the apprenticeship, you will develop practical skills in BMS controller logic, graphics, installations, controller upgrades, and the commissioning of systems within boiler rooms and plant rooms, building a strong technical foundation in building automation and controls.
Responsibilities
- Carry out assigned tasks under the guidance of experienced engineers, delivering work to company standards.
- Assist with the installation of Building Management Systems (BMS) and building controls equipment.
- Support the proactive identification and resolution of heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC) control issues.
- Develop the skills to carry out testing, maintenance and commissioning of BMS and controls systems.
- Build fault-finding and problem-solving capabilities to diagnose and resolve technical issues.
- Gain practical experience in diagnosing, repairing and maintaining electrical and control systems.
- Assist with the replacement and installation of controllers, sensors, actuators and other control devices.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping within plant rooms and HVAC installations.
- Complete and return site documentation and administrative records accurately and on time.
- Promptly escalate technical, safety or operational issues to the line manager or supervisor.
- Communicate effectively with engineers, customers and clients, providing updates where appropriate.
- Liaise professionally with residents and clients to ensure they are informed of works being undertaken.
- Develop a strong understanding of BS 7671 Wiring Regulations, health and safety requirements, and industry best practice relating to building controls.
Requirements
- A strong interest in electronics and computing
- Computer literate
- Ability to use word and excel at a basic level
- Good organisational skills and ability to prioritise workload
- Good communication skills – written and verbal
- Positive attitude and willingness to learn
- Full UK Driving Licence

Pay: £16,000.00-£26,000.00 per year
