ABOUT HVSS
High Voltage Substation Services Ltd (HVSS) is a specialist electrical engineering company founded in 2009, headquartered in Watford. We design, install, and commission high voltage substation systems up to 400kV, serving Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), Independent DNOs (iDNOs), and leading renewable energy providers across the UK.
Our project portfolio includes 33/11kV and 132/33kV turnkey substations, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) up to 67MW, and large-scale PV farm infrastructure. As we continue to grow, we are looking for a talented Commercial Manager to join our team.
THE ROLE
We are seeking an experienced and commercially astute Commercial Manager to take ownership of the contractual and financial management of our projects. This is a key role within HVSS, working closely with senior leadership and project delivery teams to protect and maximise the commercial position of the business across all live and tendered projects.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the preparation, review, and administration of contracts for construction and electrical engineering projects, ensuring compliance with legal and company requirements.
- Manage all commercial aspects of live projects including valuations, variations, interim payment applications, and final accounts.
- Oversee procurement and subcontract management, including negotiating and placing subcontracts and supply agreements.
- Support tendering activity by providing commercial input, risk analysis, and contract evaluations on new opportunities.
- Maintain comprehensive commercial records ensuring all activities are accurately documented and auditable.
- Identify and manage commercial risks, implementing mitigation strategies where required.
- Liaise with clients, subcontractors, and legal advisors to resolve contractual disputes and commercial queries.
- Prepare and present regular commercial reports to senior management, tracking project performance against budget.
- Ensure all invoicing, payment applications, and financial documentation are processed accurately and on time.
- Support the wider business in developing commercial processes, frameworks, and best practice.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Essential
- Proven experience in a commercial management or quantity surveying role within the construction or electrical engineering sector.
- Strong understanding of contract law and standard forms of contract (e.g. NEC, JCT, or bespoke forms).
- Excellent analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work to tight deadlines.
- High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
Desirable
- Degree or HND in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience in the high voltage, substations, or utilities sector.
- Familiarity with DNO/iDNO commercial frameworks or renewable energy project contracts.
- Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. RICS, CIOB, ICE).
Pay: £40,000.00-£80,000.00 per year
