Help shape the city. Lead people. Make a visible difference.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our Public Realm Service as an Area Supervisor. This is an exciting opportunity to lead our highly effective Neighbourhood Caretaker Team, alongside other high-profile operational services.
You'll lead and motivate frontline teams delivering essential services across the city. From street cleansing and grounds maintenance while ensuring operations are delivered safely, efficiently and to high standards.
No two days are the same. One moment you'll be planning resources, coordinating work and supporting staff development; the next, you'll be resolving operational challenges, responding to service demands and working with a wide range of stakeholders to ensure York looks its best.
What You'll Be Doing
- Leading, motivating and developing teams.
- Managing daily service delivery, resources, vehicles, plant and equipment.
- Ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation and safe working practices.
- Planning and coordinating work programmes.
- Investigating service issues and implementing effective solutions.
- Delivering inductions, training and toolbox talks to staff.
- Working closely with managers, partners, councillors and members of the public.
- Driving continuous improvement and helping to shape the future of the service.
What We’re Looking For
We're seeking a confident, proactive leader who can balance operational demands with strong people management and excellent customer service.
You will ideally have:
- Experience supervising or managing frontline operational teams.
- Strong organisational, planning and prioritisation skills.
- A commitment to maintaining high health and safety standards.
- Experience managing resources, vehicles, equipment and workloads.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to make sound decisions, solve problems and perform effectively under pressure.
Experience in grounds maintenance, horticulture, street cleansing, environmental services or a similar operational environment would be advantageous.
Why Join Us?
This is more than just a supervisory role. It's an opportunity to make a difference to the city, lead dedicated teams, influence service delivery and help create cleaner, greener and welcoming communities for residents and visitors.
This post is suiatable as a job share opportunity.
