Barleycorn Mildenhall is a small family run business with multiple locations in West Suffolk & surrounding areas. We pride ourselves on providing a familiar, friendly service where we always have time for our customers.
Our Barleycorn Hub Cafe is located in the Atrium of Mildenhall Hub, where we have the Abbeycroft Leisure Centre, Mildenhall Library, West Suffolk Council offices and more.
The Role
The Café Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the café, ensuring exceptional customer service, maintaining high standards across all areas of the business, leading the team, and driving the café's overall performance and profitability.
You would be heading up a fab team of around 8 - 10 people, who all work a range of hours in the business.
This is a 32 hours per week position, over 5 days week. The exact weekly shift pattern is available on request but will be between the hours of Monday - Saturday, 7.30am - 7.30pm. There is some flexibility with this for the right candidate.
Your roles and responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
Operations
- Oversee the day-to-day running of the café, including opening and closing procedures.
- Maintain consistently high standards of food quality, cleanliness and customer service.
- Ensure full compliance with food hygiene, health & safety and company procedures.
- Monitor stock levels, place orders and manage stock rotation to minimise waste.
- Maintain café equipment and arrange repairs or servicing when required.
- Develop, implement and monitor operational procedures and daily checklists.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with Abbeycroft Leisure and the local community.
- Work with senior management to implement promotions, seasonal menus and marketing initiatives.
Team
- Train and develop staff with support from senior management.
- Manage staff rotas, holidays, sickness absence and arrange shift cover to ensure appropriate staffing levels.
- Lead, motivate and support the team to deliver an outstanding customer experience.
- Manage performance, attendance and employee concerns in line with company policies, with support from senior management and HR where required.
- Foster a positive and professional working environment.
Customer Service
- Deliver and promote exceptional customer service at all times.
- Resolve customer queries and complaints.
- Build strong relationships with regular customers and create a welcoming atmosphere.
- Lead by example by working alongside the team in the day-to-day running of the café - we’re looking for someone who isn't afraid to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in.
Compliance & Administration
- Ensure full compliance with food safety and hygiene legislation.
- Carry out regular safety checks and ensure staff receive appropriate training.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation for audits, inspections and compliance.
- Complete daily cashing up, banking and other administrative duties as required.
Business Performance & Growth
- Work with senior management to implement promotions, seasonal menus and marketing initiatives.

Experience
We’re looking for someone with previous experience in a café, hospitality or customer focused environment. Experience supporting or leading a team would be highly desirable.
The ideal candidate will have experience with:
- Working in a busy hospitality environment.
- Supporting and training team members.
- Opening and closing procedures.
- Cash handling and daily café operations.
- Maintaining food hygiene, cleanliness and service standards.
- Stock management and day-to-day organisation.
Previous supervisory or management experience is preferred, but we are also open to candidates who are ready to take the next step in their hospitality career and demonstrate the right attitude, reliability and leadership skills.
