Fancy taking charge of the numbers?
Abbey Sales and Lettings Ltd, trading externally as Shires Estate & Letting Agents, are looking for a brilliant, commercially minded and slightly unstoppable Head of Finance to join our growing business.
No endless corporate waffle. No spreadsheets for the sake of spreadsheets.
The Job
This is your chance to take the financial reins of a growing independent property business and help shape what comes next.
We are looking for someone who knows their way around management accounts, budgets, forecasts, cash flow, KPIs and commercial decision-making. Someone who can turn numbers into useful insight, keep a close eye on performance and help the leadership team make smart decisions.
You will take ownership of everything finance, working closely with the directors and leading a small finance team that we hope to grow over time. You will be trusted to improve processes, strengthen controls, support the wider business and make sure we have the financial information needed to keep moving forward.
You will:
- Take responsibility for the full finance function across the business
- Lead, support and develop a small finance team, with the opportunity to grow the function over time
- Prepare accurate monthly management accounts, forecasts, budgets and cash-flow reporting
- Create monthly profit and loss accounts for each company and department, providing clear analysis of performance, profitability, variances and areas for improvement
- Produce clear, insightful board packs to support director-level decision-making
- Monitor business performance against agreed KPIs and help drive action where needed
- Work with the leadership team to develop, track and improve commercial and operational KPIs
- Provide clear financial insight, identifying trends, risks, opportunities and areas for improvement
- Manage day-to-day finance operations, including payments, banking, reconciliations and controls
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, supplier payments and credit control
- Maintain robust financial processes, reporting systems and compliance procedures
- Support annual budgeting, business planning and longer-term growth plans
- Work with external accountants, advisers, suppliers and other stakeholders
- Improve systems and processes so finance is efficient, reliable and useful to the wider team
- Use Xero confidently across the finance function, including reporting, reconciliations, invoicing, payment processes and financial controls
- Help colleagues understand the story behind the numbers, not just the numbers themselves
- Bring energy, ideas and a healthy dose of commercial ambition to the business
You will have:
- Proven experience in a senior finance role, such as Head of Finance, Finance Manager, Financial Controller or similar
- A recognised accounting qualification, obr substantial relevant experience
- Strong experience preparing management accounts, monthly P&Ls, budgets, forecasts and cash-flow reporting
- Experience producing profit and loss reporting by company, department, branch or cost centre
- Experience creating board packs and presenting financial information clearly to senior stakeholders
- A track record of monitoring KPIs and using data to support business performance
- Experience managing, supporting or developing a finance team
- Full working experience of Xero, including day-to-day processing, bank reconciliations, reporting, invoicing, payment workflows, management accounts and financial controls
- Confidence using Xero to improve reporting accuracy, visibility and finance processes
- A strong understanding of financial controls, compliance and reporting requirements
- Excellent attention to detail, balanced with a practical commercial mindset
- The confidence to challenge, influence and support senior leaders
- The ability to explain financial information clearly to non-finance colleagues
- A proactive approach to improving systems, processes and performance
- A genuine interest in property, people and helping a growing business succeed
You’ll get:
- A competitive salary, depending on experience
- A senior role with real influence across the business
- The chance to shape and grow the finance function
- Genuine opportunities to grow as the business grows
- A supportive, ambitious team around you
- Room to bring your ideas, make your mark and actually enjoy coming to work
- Discounted fees for sales, lettings and related services
