Workshop Manager / Lead Fitter
Job Purpose
Wildes Plant Hire Ltd is seeking a hardworking and reliable Workshop Assistant to support the day-to-day operations of our busy plant hire workshop. The successful candidate will have a general mechanical understanding and a willingness to learn. Formal qualifications are not essential, as full training will be provided. This role involves assisting engineers and fitters in maintaining, preparing, and organising plant and equipment to ensure a safe and efficient working environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist workshop fitters and engineers with the maintenance and repair of plant and equipment.
- Prepare machinery ready for hire and return inspections.
- Keep the workshop, yard, and storage areas clean, tidy, and organised.
- Carry out basic mechanical tasks under supervision.
- Check fluid levels, grease machines, and assist with routine servicing activities.
- Collect and deliver parts, tools, and equipment as required.
- Report any damage, defects, or safety concerns to management.
- Follow company health and safety procedures at all times.
- Support other workshop and yard activities as required.
- Engine rebuilds, gearbox rebuilds, re-bushing, hydraulic repairs, servicing, on site repairs, small tools
Requirements
Essential
- General mechanical knowledge or interest in machinery, vehicles, or equipment.
- Good practical skills and a hands-on approach.
- Reliable, punctual, and hardworking.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Good attention to detail.
- Commitment to maintaining a safe working environment.
Desirable
- Previous experience in a workshop, plant hire, agriculture, construction, or automotive environment.
- Basic knowledge of construction plant and equipment.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Forklift or plant operation experience (training can be provided).
