HGV Class 2 Refuse Driver Loader

We are looking for a reliable and experienced HGV Class 2 Refuse Driver Loader to join our waste management team. This is a varied, hands-on role combining professional driving, vehicle operation and active outdoor work. You will play an important part in delivering an essential service to local residents and businesses while supporting cleaner streets and a more sustainable community.

What You’ll Be Doing
· Safely drive and operate a specialist Class 2 refuse collection vehicle valued at approximately £125,000
· Navigate narrow residential roads, hilly areas and tight spaces with care and confidence
· Lead or support a team of refuse loaders, helping each collection round run safely and efficiently
· Collect residential and commercial refuse, recycling, green waste and other materials from designated locations
· Support collections of bulky, clinical or other specialist waste when required
· Assist with loading throughout the shift, including when working as a spare driver
· Guide the driver through crowded areas and restricted spaces when working as a loader
· Complete daily vehicle safety checks and report defects promptly to the Transport team
· Record missed collections, route issues, driver logs, defect reports and other required documentation accurately
· Respond professionally and courteously to residents, customers and other road users
· Clean up any waste spillages immediately and help keep the vehicle and cab clean
· Load and distribute sacks, wheeled bins and other containers as required
· Support depot managers with daily work allocations and other appropriate operational duties
· Attend required training and comply with regular DVLA checks
What We’re Looking For
· A valid HGV Class 2 licence with no more than six penalty points
· A valid Digital Tachograph Card and Driver CPC
· At least six months’ UK experience driving and operating a refuse lorry
· Good awareness of road safety, waste management and health and safety requirements
· Strong hand, eye and limb coordination for vehicle manoeuvring and collection work
· The physical fitness to lift, load, operate machinery and remain on your feet for most of the day
· A practical, safety-first approach and close attention to detail
· Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team
· A calm, professional manner when dealing with the public, including challenging situations
· Flexibility to adapt routes around closures, poor weather and other delays
· Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions and in dusty, dirty or odorous environments
Desirable
· Knowledge of the Brighton and Hove area
· Previous off-road HGV driving experience
· Own transport to help ensure prompt attendance for shifts

Important to Know
This is a genuinely active driver-loader position. When deployed as a spare driver, you may be required to load the collection vehicle throughout the day; this will not affect your rate of pay. High-visibility clothing and all required PPE must be worn at all times, including within the depot.
