Finance Assistant

Salary: Circa £28,000
Contract: 8-12-month temporary assignment
Hours: Monday-Thursday 08:00-17:00, with 30-minute unpaid break; Friday 08:00-13:00
Hybrid working: Three days office-based and two days working from home, with Friday as a homeworking day
Role Purpose
To support the Finance Director and wider finance team with month-end accounting, P&L analysis, budgeting and detailed financial analysis. The role will involve reviewing financial and operational data, investigating variances, supporting the monthly reporting cycle, and assisting with the preparation and analysis of budget information.
Key Responsibilities
Month-End and Financial Reporting
- Support the monthly month-end process.
- Review and analyse Profit & Loss accounts.
- Review the detailed transactions behind P&L movements.
- Identify and investigate financial variances.
- Prepare and post journals.
- Support balance sheet activities.
- Assist with cash book activities where required.
- Provide ad hoc accounting support during the month-end process.
- Support the Finance Director and Financial Accountants with financial analysis and reporting.
The first week of each month will have a significant focus on month-end activities and P&L analysis.
Budgeting and Financial Analysis
- Support the preparation and maintenance of departmental and production budgets.
- Update and analyse detailed budget files.
- Maintain and analyse headcount files and associated costs.
- Review actual financial performance against budget.
- Investigate and explain movements within budget and financial information.
- Support detailed financial analysis requested by the Finance Director and wider finance team.
- Assist with the annual budget-planning process.
The main budget-planning period runs from approximately mid-September through to November, during which budgeting activity will be a significant priority.
Excel and Data Analysis
- Work with detailed financial spreadsheets and data sets.
- Analyse and manipulate financial information using Excel.
- Use Excel functions including:
- VLOOKUPs
- SUMIFS
- Pivot Tables
- Maintain the accuracy and integrity of financial and budget information.
- Identify discrepancies and unusual movements within financial data.
Required Experience / Knowledge
Candidates should be able to demonstrate practical experience or a good working knowledge of:
- Profit & Loss accounts.
- Understanding and analysing P&L information.
- Month-end accounting processes.
- Journals.
- Financial variance analysis.
- Budgeting.
- Working with detailed financial information.
- Balance sheet activities.
- Financial analysis using Microsoft Excel.
- VLOOKUPs, SUMIFS and Pivot Tables.
Candidates could have gained this knowledge through formal accounting study or practical experience.
Qualified-by-experience candidates will be considered where they can demonstrate sufficient practical accounting and analytical capability.
Desirable Experience
- SAP experience.
- Previous involvement in producing or supporting management accounts.
- Budgeting and forecasting exposure.
- Production or operational finance experience.
- Headcount and labour-cost analysis.
- Manufacturing or automotive finance experience.
Team Structure
The Finance Assistant will report to the Finance Director and work within a finance team.
