The Centre of Excellence for Anaerobic Digestion (CEAD), based in the Department of Biology at the University of York, is a collaborative research centre that combines microbiology, molecular biology, engineering, and environmental science to transform organic waste into clean energy and valuable resources. We are looking for a skilled technician to provide technical expertise and perform laboratory work for CEAD’s expanding commercial research portfolio and industrial microbiological solutions. You will manage day-to-day experimental workflows, maintain equipment, support sample processing, and prepare risk assessments for review. Core activities include operating fermenters/anaerobic digesters, feedstock characterisation, DNA extractions, and product separation. This role offers an exciting opportunity to engage with industrial clients and gain exposure to cutting-edge technologies while collaborating closely with academics, researchers, and students.
This role is fixed term until 31 July 2029.
- An HNC, HND, or undergraduate degree, or an equivalent level of professional experience
- Practical experience within a microbiology or biochemistry laboratory, including proficiency in some related analytical methods e.g. DNA extractions, chromatography and spectrophotometry
- A strong working knowledge of laboratory risk assessments, COSHH regulations, and adherence to standard operating procedures
- Demonstrated ability to collect, organise, and present experimental findings for inclusion in technical documentation
- The capacity to work effectively both on your own initiative and as a collaborative member of a team
- A reliable and self-motivated approach, with the interpersonal skills required to engage successfully with both academic colleagues and industrial partners
